I'm building a new PC and trying to figure out what card I should get. I've been looking through all the threads here and the info is kinda overwhelming. I havent really been fallowing video cards since I got my 9700 pro so I'm kinda at alost as to what to get. I want to be able to play Doom 3 and HL 2 with the setting really cranked up. Plus I would like to be able to keep up with the new games that will be coming out without havint to turn everything down.
I was looking at these cards.

Those are just the 2 I've been looking at I would welcome any suggestions on tese cards as well as others. A card that runs cooler would be good as well since it will be in a small case.
 
Those cards probable perform similarly.

I'd save $100.00 and get the 6800GT.

Use that extra hundred to get as much system memory
as you can or a fastfastfast CPU. :)

I accidently linked to the wrong card but it looks like the PCI express card is sold out at new egg and I really want to order from them since thats were I'm getting the rest of my parts.

Here is anpther question am I going to notice any differencr between the 6800GT and the 6800 Ultra?

In benchmarks yes, in games, probably not. I can play every game ive tried with the settings maxes at 1200x1024 4xAA 16xaf with no issues, unless you want to get into 1600x1200 with full aa/af then you wont notice a great deal of difference in games unless you turn on a frame rate counter like fraps. I'd save the money for when the next core is out, or if you possibly can, go 6600Gt, money on high end cards this late in their life is money wasted imho.
 
That makes alot of sense. THe main reason I was wanting one of the higher end cards was because I just wanted to get a good card and then not have to worry about it for awhile. I will look into the 6600 as well.
 
Another vote for the 6800GT. Not only do they overclock well, but they support SM3.0, DirectX 9.0C and FP16 HDR. The ATI cards won't support any of that for at least 6 months.
 
don't get a sledgehammer, either wait until there is a san diego 4000 or get a san diego 3700, again at stock speeds you wont notice a great deal of difference, and i get the opinion that san diegos will over clock better. Or even better, get a gig of ram, please get a gig of ram, please, go for a 3500 with a gig over a 4000 with 512, you will get better performance.

oops I am getting a gig of ram I accidently said only 512. will the san diego 3700 perform better than the AMD Athlon 64 3800+ Venice which is what I as going to get in the first place?

There shouldent be much of a difference, but IIRC the san diegos have SSE3 support and the like, making them much better.

Pretty much identical, clock speed is lower, but you can sort that out in bios settings ;) and it has 1mb cache, which is good.
 
For gaming would the performance be about the same? If So I think I'm going to get the 3700 I still haven't figured out what the FSB on board part means
 
I read a bunch of reviews on it and I thought it sounded like a good card and its not too expensive. What don't you like about it?
 
good point for some reason I thought it was a 16 I stand corrected thanks for pointing that out. I placed my order now I got the roswell instead I can't wait to put this all togather and see how it runs.

I chose the gigabyte card because it has dual dvi ports (which you can always use a vga adapter if you need vga)

But if that card is too rich for your blood by all means get a 6800gt and you can have the option to go sli later on.

I am just not a fan of nvidia drivers.

I am goign to build two of these systems this weekend for my friends people are getting 30k 3dmarks 2k1 and really nice marks on everything. One friend is getting a x800xl w/3000+venice and the other is getting a 850xt and a 3700 SD. But you definatly need to get a venice or san diego core.
 
Thanks for the input I don't think I will be able to use SLI this is all going into a Fragbox and unless I'm wrong I would'nt ba able to fit a board that supports that in this case. I did end up deciding on the 3700+ San Diago though.

Good choice on the cpu. Make sure to post how well it clocks, if you are overclocking. I think you should be very happy with your new rig, theres not a great deal an x800xl wont +3700 wont run maxed out completely. COngrats.
