1) What will you be doing with this PC? Gaming? Photoshop? Web browsing? etc
Secondary Gaming machine for the kids. World in Conflict, Battlefield2 are possibles.

2) What's your budget? Are tax and shipping included?
I'd like to keep it all under $500, but cheaper would be better.

3) Where do you live?
Indianapolis. Fry's nearby, no microcenter.
4) What exact parts do you need for that budget? CPU, RAM, case, etc. Please be very specific.
CPU, Mobo, RAM, GPU for sure. Maybe HDD.

5) If reusing any parts, what parts will you be reusing? Please be especially specific about the power supply. List make and model.
PSU (Corsair 450w), Case (Antec Sonata), Disk Drives. 74GB Raptor and 200GB Seagate drives. Current build has been having various crashes, unsure if this is due to the disk drives. May squeeze and extra $50 into the build if I can find a Samsung F3 500GB. Seems the safest route.

6) Will you be overclocking?
Maybe.

7) What size monitor do you have and/or plan to have?
Viewsonic 19", 1280X1024. Future may get replaced by primary system's Dell Ultra 19, but still 1280X1024.

8) When do you plan on building/buying the PC?
I can buy now, or wait if there might be anything upcoming worth waiting for.

9) What features do you need in a motherboard? RAID? Firewire? Crossfire or SLI support? etc.
Nothing fancy.

10) Do you already have a legit and reusable/transferable OS key/license? If yes, what OS? 32bit or 64bit?
Unfortunately no. Current machine only has OEM license for XP Home.

I believe I'll be in the AMD line for this upgrade due to my budget. I have read through other threads and have seen suggestions that might work for me. One option I haven't explored too much is to upgrade the GPU in the main machine (Ati 4850) and move that GPU to this secondary machine.

Any thoughts/help would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you.

I always use the excuse of needing to upgrade the "other" computer to upgrade my own. :p I have a long hand-me-down chain, so I agree, upgrade that HD4850 and move it over to the secondary build if you can afford it. ;)

You're most likely looking at...
$156 - COMBO: AMD Phenom II X2 545 Callisto 3.0GHz + GIGABYTE GA-MA770T-UD3P
$105 - G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3-1600 F3-12800CL9D-4GBRL CL9 1.5v
$105 - Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit OEM
$140 - XFX HD-575X-ZNFC Radeon HD 5750 1GB
==============
$506 + tax and shipping

You can definitely drop down to an Athlon II X2, but with the Ph2, you can most likely unlock the other 2 cores very easily.

If you need the HDD, eWiz may have it in stock:
$55 - Samsung Spinpoint F3 HD502HJ 500GB 7200 RPM SATA300 16MB Cache

If you were to upgrade your own vidcard, would your budget change at all?
Also, what resolution/settings do you play at, and what games? I'm guessing the 1280X1024 Ultrasharp 19"? If so, don't bother upgrading the vidcard unless you plan on upgrading the monitor. A new monitor would be around $200 or less, but it would determine which new vidcard you'd need.

Good build as usual enginurd, and I think that you should move your 4850 into that machine and get a nice 5850 for yourself in your main machine.

5850 might be a bit much for now.. tempting though it is :)

If I'm only going to be gaming on this second machine at 1280X1024, will the 5670 be enough? That savings could then be applied to the HDD.

I would not go with that ram gpu or hdd. Go with Corsair/G.skill, get atleast a 5770 and get the 640gb black wd

I'd spend the extra $30 for the 550BE and unlock the cores, but you don't really need them for gaming, hehe. While unlocking will affect OC'ing, it should only be about a 200Mhz drop in OC speed.

I agree, if you get the HD5770, move the 4850 to the secondary machine. I also agree that a 640GB blue or black would be better than the 500GB blue drive, unless WD now uses single 500GB/platter in those drives like Samsung does on the F3 (which is what makes the F3 so fast).

both comps are gaming @ 1280x1024 guys. While a gpu upgrade would allow for a monitor upgrade he isnt complaining about the 4850's performance for his machine.

indeed, but as i said earlier, its a good time/reason to upgrade. personally, i just hate buying old tech if i can avoid it, and in his case, its possible to avoid buying another hd4850, me thinks.

Pretty sure I'm going with the 550BE, Giga or Asus 770MB, Gskill Ram. Not seeing the Samsung F3s in stock at newegg, may go with:

Seagate 7200.12 500GB
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148395

And... looks like I'll go with the 5770 and drop the 4850 from the main machine to the upgrade build. I'm feeling a sudden hankering for another 19" Ultrasharp and some Eyefinity :D

Couple more questions:
1) Thinking of aftermarket cooling to take full advantage of the CPU. Is the Coolermaster 212 recommended for the Phenoms? If so, will it fit in my Sonata II?
2) Price is the same: "regular" Gskill or Ripjaws?

or

http://http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231277

Thanks for all the help, I really appreciate it! And, of course, I will keep this thread updated with progress and pics!

I would go with the ripjaws, solely on the fact that they look cooler and are the same price.

1) It should fit fine.
2) ripjaws

If you can swing it, or find a deal on it (typically for $60), the WD6400AAKS would be better than the 'cuda.12. I'm disappointed with mine, because its slower than both the F3 and Caviars, but oh wellz, lol.
