I've been trying to do as much research as possible in the past couple of weeks as I'm planning an upgrade to my video card. I'm finding quickly that being out of the loop for a couple of years really sets you back, so I need some more help from you all.

I'm looking to spend $200 max on a new card, and want it to be as futureproof as possible. I'd like for it to play games at pretty high settings (I'm not looking for the most intense graphics ever, but I do enjoy when things look nice). I've been looking at the GTX 260, but for some reason can't convince myself to purchase it right now.

So, should I wait for a little to see if prices drop, or is getting the 260 now a pretty good idea? Or, is there something else you would recommend all together? I waited to see what the 5770 did, and it doesn't look bad, but from what I've read it falls just short of what the GTX 260 does.

Considering nVidia won't have anything new out soon, I don't see the 58xx dropping in price. Save some cash and get the 5850. That is your best bet.
 
I would say try to sell your current card and use that plus the $200 to get a 5850. If you really can't manage the extra $50-60 then the new 5770 will probably be your best bet for a future proof card.
 
Would I be able to use the 8800GT as a dedicated Physx card, or would it not work with the 5850 in there?

Due to Nvidia changing both their display and PhysX drivers, you won't be able to use it for dedicated physx with a non Nvidia main card without using a third-party program to hack the drivers. I agree with the others in this thread, sell your 8800GT and buy a 5850. At your res, it should be a very noticeable upgrade.

I think the 5830 will probably fill the 200$ price range. Complete speculation though, never know, they might drop the 5850 and 5870 down for the X2's
 
Ok. Well. I just ordered a 5850 from tiger direct. XFX is in stock there for 265 free shipping. I had a few extra bucks more to spend then I thought so I pulled the trigger early. Now just to find a buyer... looking forward to the card!

Well, now it's just a matter of finding a place that has it in stock. Tiger Direct is backordered, trying Circuit City now. I noticed the storefront is the same as TD's, they don't share stock do they?

Yeah they are both owned by Systemax I believe.
 
Ahh yes, I see that now. I am trying for the Sapphire now, hopefully this one goes through...
