Upgrade my notebooks processor now or later?

Hey all,

I currently have an incredibly upgradable laptop, and I purchased it, lowly speced, so I could upgrade it down the line. It takes an Intel Socket M Merom Processor. Currently it has a ~1.4 Ghz Celeron in it, and I was looking to upgrade it to this (http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16819111304) Intel Core 2 Duo T5500 Merom 1.66GHz Socket M 34W Dual-Core Processor. I have two questions:

1. Is this an upgrade that is worth the money?

2. Will this processor be going out of production for this Socket Type soon? If not, should I wait for price to go down a bit more before purchasing?

You also have to take into account the thermal properties of your laptop. If it is fine with your current cpu, there's no guarantee that it'll be fine with the new one. Also, do you know for a fact that you can swap cpu's? If all above is fine then I would look into upgrading it. The Core2 architecture is so much better than the older ones that the Celeron is probably based on. Dual core is always useful if you are doing many cpu intensive tasks that are threaded or run on a separate core from one another.
 
Price probley won't go down, intel has moved to Socket P so no pressure from new socket M chips to drop it, and newegg doesn't really drop the price, just kinda waits till they slowly sell out. Once there gone, I bet ebay is the only place to find them.

The upgrade is gonna be pretty substaintial, but maybe it might be better to sell of the old lappy, take the money on a proc upgrade, save a few more pennies, and get a new notebook with a T8300 or so.

That celeron is based on Core architecture i belive, its an origonal Core Duo with 1 core disabled.
 
Hey, thanks for the reply!

I talked to a technical representative from the company I purchased the laptop from, and he told me that not only would this laptop support the processor, but they also used to offer the same processor as an option when the laptop is in production. So yeah, I would imagine it is thermally acceptable.

I believe Intel released a statement regarding their end of production for Socket M processors (T7xx, T5xx, etc.).

If you can, why not upgrade to a T7200. You'll get more L2 cache, more CPU speed, and SSE4. But then again, make sure you can upgrade to a newer CPU. Check with your manufacturer first.

QFT, except newegg is wrong on the SSE4, and so is older versions of CPUz. They mis read SSSE3 as SSE4. There is a difference... SSE4 has only been on the 45nm intel chips. (yes there is a difference between SSE3 and SSSE3, and 65nm chips have both) more info
