Upgrade my 1.8 P4?

No way in hell. That POS will be slower. Also, is your p4 northwood or willamette based? To be honest, its not worth upgrading to another northwood A cpu. You really need a new mobo.

so you're saying that 1.8P4 will be faster than a 2.4celeron?

I see that the celeron sports lower cache but ... I guess I am just not seeing it then

The celeron will probably be on par or slower than your P4. Just look at the price how good can it be?

Depends on your mobo. First of all, upgrade the BIOS to the latest version. This is necessary to ensure that the mobo recognises the newer Northwood P4's (in case you have an older Willamette P4). Then you can buy any P4 with 533 Mhz FSB (i.e. 2.26, 2.4, 2.66, 2.8 or 3.06 Ghz) - all you have to do is manually adjust the FSB (and RAM speed and PCI/AGP speed) in the BIOS. It is very likely that you can do these, unless you have an Intel-branded mobo (as opposed to Asus, Abit, MSI etc.). So you can probaly go at least up to 3.06 Ghz or even higher if you can raise the FSB beyond 133 Mhz (533 Mhz quad-pumped).

It's a lot lower cache, if Your 1.8 is a Northwood, 512k L2 versus 128k L2. Why not upgrade to a Northwood 2.6, like this one for $149 instead of a Celeron 2.4. You'll get a lot more performance out of the P4 2.6/400 than a Northwood Celeron. Of course it's a little over double the price of the 2.4 Celeron but still isn't too high.
