Ok, so I've built a few computers from the ground up, and I'm gonna be helping a friend to upgrade his system. Here's the status of his current PC. It's a fairly fancy Compaq (yeah, I know), AMD A64 3000+ Socket 754, SiS Mobo of some kind. He has 2 SATA drives with a Compaq forced partition on one of the disks with data for reinstallation.
What I/he wants to do is upgrade the mobo to a Socket 939 nForce 4 and purchase a nice Athlon X2 4200+. My question is, does a new Mobo/Processor installation require a reinstall of Windows XP? If it does, I'm really not sure how that would work since the only copy of Windows he has is in the Compaq forced partition. Also, note the difficultly that may arise from having the system HDD a SATA drive and the need for SATA drivers...
Anyway, I'm just not sure what would happen if we plopped in a new mobo and processor. So, yeah, any advice would be greatly appreciated!!
