Hey, I really need help with upgrading my PC:

My current setup:
1.4Ghz Athlon T-Bird
768mb of pc-2100 (266mhz) ram
Geforce 4 Ti-4200
Antec 430 watt TruePower PSU

I have around $640CAD (around $485USD) to spend on computer parts.

Right now I'm considering 2 options: either get a Radeon 9800 PRO and a 2400+/2600+ or just a GeForce 6800 GT and upgrade my CPU a few months later.

Normally, I'd turn to benchmarks to make a decision, but every review that I've seen on the Radeon 9800PRO and the Nvidia 6800GT all use high end Athlon64 systems.

Anyone have any suggestions? With today's graphic intensive games do CPU's make THAT much difference? Couldn't I just crank up the resolution as much as possible to take much of the load off of the CPU?

I am in almost the same boat as you (diff PSU and I am using a Ti4400).

I have about the same amount of money to spend. I am thinking I will upgrade my CPU, RAM, and Mobo because I feel that is my major limiting factor in all things currently.

I would suggest you doing the same, but I am sure some guru will pop in to give us better advice.


My current toss up: Do I move to the Athlon 64 platform or not? It's either go A64 with mobo and RAM or go AthlonXP 3000+ w/400 mhz FSB + RAM.

what mobo do you have? that might limit your cpu upgrade abilities.. i guess with a mobiel though you can still do 133 x whatever and get raw speed out of it...
 
What about this:

P4 2.4A Prescott
MSI PT880 Neo-LSR

This combo was used in the [H] Overclocking the 2.4A review from a couple months back and seemed to work well. Plus, since the 2.4A has a 533MHz (133*4) fsb, you can keep your current ram without crippling performance.

That combo runs about $200 US together, leaving almost $200 for a video card. Possible video cards:

ATi:
9600xt ~ $150 US
9800pro ~ $190 US

nVidia:
5900xt ~ 180 US
 
As long as your current motherboard supports AthlonXP's, then a mobile barton would be a good choice. If you find that you need to upgrade to a newer mobo to support newer processors, I think either route is comparable.
