Upgrade from Ryzen 7600?

I have a Gigabyte X870 Eagle with the 65w Ryzen 7600 (non-X). The PC was originally for basic tasks using the integrated graphics but I'm thinking about moving the 9070 XT out of my 5700x3d build and converting that to the family PC instead.

2 questions:

-Will the 7600 be as good, I'm currently limited to PCIe Gen3 on my NVME and 9070XT since I'm on a B450 board.

-If I need to upgrade the CPU to get better performance than my current setup, at what point will it get better? I was reading the 7500x3d reviews but that's less cores than my current CPU, does that matter?

Both PC's are 2x16GB ram, I game at 1440, and the only games I currently play are BF6 and Wreckfest
 
youll see hardly any difference due to the pcie speed change but the cpu change would help due to the higher speed, unless you play stuff that relies on more cores. since you have it, why not try it? make sure you have enough psu though...

It should be, it's a 750W Seasonic. The AM4 build the GPU's in has a 750W Seasonic as well, just a different model. You think just try the 7600? before doing that I need to get a cheap GPU (cheapest I can find to put in the AM4 board, no gaming).

I know when I moved from a 3600X to the 5700x3d the gaming difference was huge. I credited that to the x3d's extra cache but maybe I should just try the 6-core non x3d, it can't hurt. I wish I hung onto one of my old GPU's instead of posting them on eBay. My old RX 480 would come in clutch right now.

If you move thr 9070xt to the “family” system (so it will be x870e, 7600 and 9070xt) then with bf6 and wreckfest you’re worried about the cpu being the bottleneck? And what cpu would you need to increase 1440p performance?

For starters, the 5700x3d and 7600 are basically the same, maybe the x3d a tiny bit faster but once you factor in going from b450 pcie 3x16 x870 pcie 5x16 it’s basically a wash.

7700/7700x should give about 7-10% jump vs 7600 at $50-70 upgrade cost, otherwise next big jump would be a 7800x3d +12-15% at $150-190 upgrade cost.

Don’t know wreckfest and how it stacks up but should be similar. So up to you to determine what is worth the upgrade cost. Think 7700/7700x is worth it as not too bad a jump for 1/4 more cores and tangible benefits.

7600 will be really close from a 5700x3d in game and a bit faster at everything else:

some tile that love cache a lot (Baldur gates 3, you could see a small difference, but not in general.
 
Thanks for the replies, I guess I wrongly assumed the 7600 was inferior. I'll be sourcing a budget GPU for the B450 then make the switch
 
if its just for media playback, there were some 1080s for $70 in fs/t....

yes my point was to the OP, going from a 5700x3d to a 7600 and vice versa is quite a side move, (I think the OP assumed the pci 3.0 was an bigger issue than it is to make those change), could be preferring the pc case-cooling solution or USB thunderbolt.

But if it implies buying a GPU to do what the iGPU could do, maybe not worth it to change anything, hard to tell without any clue.
 
I'm mainly after hitting the reset button on longevity/keeping my gaming PC current and upgradeable.
The second PC is general purpose, the most strenuous things it'll do is watch YouTube & do office stuff. I'll be shopping for a GPU to put in the AM4 build on black Friday/cyber Monday. If nothing pops up I'll order used and call it a day. My mind is made up, I'm definitely just moving the GPU to the X870/7600 once I have a GPU for the AM4. I have a 2070 in my flight sim, depending on deals I might upgrade that and move it over, but unlikely because it's setup and serves it's purpose just fine. I guess it depends how enticing the BF/CM deals I see are.
 
The problem with your plan is the discrete GPU market itself. You can no longer purchase a new low-end discrete GPU whose support has not completely ended (that is, the most recent available driver is several years old), and that the least expensive still-supported discrete GPU is way too expensive (or at least costs almost two-thirds as much money as that RTX 2070 originally cost).

And this situation is the result of not-so-good planning.

I’ve also been guilty of this myself in the past, choosing a platform that’s near the end of its production life cycle for a daily driver.

you can still get amd 5/6000 and nv 3/4000 gpus and they have current drivers, amd just wont be "optimizing" them for new games. but yes prices are a bit stupid...

I've been on AM4 since it was released, I wouldn't call it bad planning at all. I've upgraded the MB once, 2x CPU's plus 2x GPU upgrades. The longest run was after upgrading to the B450, Ryzen 3600X & RX5700. I'm still rocking nearly 10yr old ram, PSU, SSD & HDD. It does have a nvme boot drive now as well, but it has been a great PC.
Upgrading to the 5700x3d was great/brought new life to it as well, I don't regret spending that $150, it has served me well for almost 2 years itself. I was fortunate enough to source the RX 9070 XT on launch day, and while the PC still does everything I need it to, I know it's the end of the road. My thought is, since the second PC is general use, I should move my nvme & GPU over so I can continue to upgrade. The sooner I make the switch, the easier the transition will be.
I have under $500 into the AM5 combo I used to build it, I just threw it in a cheap case and used an old PSU/SSD that was laying around. Anyway, I just want to defend my AM4 PC because it's been (still is) so good to me and I'm hoping the AM5 upgrade does just as well. I'm so glad I made the switch from Intel when I did, it was great timing with AM4.

Maybe I'll even find somebody wanting to trade their 5600G for the 5700x3d if it comes down to it.

From now until black friday you should be able to get a 9070xt or 5070ti level GPU at right around suggested MSRP if not a bit lower. After that it's well within the realm of possibility they won't be available for that price for another year due to DRAM supply being sucked up by the AI monster and production capacity going there instead of consumer-level product.

Suggest the above models as anything after that (5080 or 5090) is diminishing returns, 5070 is not a good long term investment with only 12gb VRAM, and the 9070 while nice isn't quite as good a deal as the 9070xt at MSRP (550 vs 600).
The 5060ti and 9060xt 16gbs are very good cards at MSRP, though if you're shelling out 350-400 for them you'd be better off putting up another $250-350 while getting more performance and another 2-3 years of near high-end performance.

I get it. The problem is that I have been a relative latecomer to the platform upgrade path for most of the time. In fact, I did not get into Ryzen until well into the Zen 2 era (3000 series), at a time when my daily driver was still a quad-core Haswell Refresh i7-4790K, although I got into LGA 1700 fairly early with an i7-12700K which I had since upgraded to an i9-14900K.

My most recent platform upgrade, AM5 in a mini-ITX box, came after the Zen 5 (9000-series) CPUs have been released; however, I ended up with a Ryzen 5 7600X because I felt that the 9600X wasn’t worth the higher price.

And the problem with the discrete GPU market is that even the least expensive still-supported new GPU is clearly overkill for the needs of a secondary family PC that would be on the older platform.

5800X3D Vs. 7600X Vs. 9800X3D. The video is also good for understanding what it looks like to "balance" GPU and CPU performance. Basically, if you don't have a 5090: does it still make sense to have a faster CPU?

In this comparison, the PCI-e 3.0 throughput will become a bottleneck if the GPU uses fewer than the full 16 lanes and has a relatively low amount of VRAM. Otherwise, the performance difference would be relatively minor.

I almost bought the 7600X, but instead went with the 65W TDP 7600 because it came with a cooler. It wasn't going to be used for gaming at the time, in hindsight I wish I grabbed a better AM5 CPU, oh well.
The more I learn though, I still think the 7600 will be just fine. The beauty of moving my GPU to the AM5 is that I'll be able to grab the latest X3D chip out when it's time to upgrade. I'm excited to make the switch. I'll decide what to do GPU-wise for the AM4 build soon.
I was thinking about buying something used but I might upgrade my flight sim to a 5060 ti 16gb or a 5070 and moving its 2070 over.
