Hi [H]!

I currently have the following computer and want to jump ship to Intel.

  • Asus A88X-Pro
  • AMD Athlon X4 750K
  • G Skill 2x4GB 2133 RAM
  • 64GB SSD
  • 2x WD Green 2TB
  • Asus GTX 760 DCII
  • Corsair AX1200

What would be the best upgrade for me assuming I only want to swap motherboard and CPU? How are these new Pentiums? I like toying around with VMs as a budding IT pro learning new things. Would the Pentium only being dual core be able to keep up with running 2 or 3 VMs at the same time? I'm sort of considering a 4690K since its the same price as a 4670K for a little performance bump and has 2 more cores than the Pentium.

What about the 3770k Ivy bridge that's the same price? is there any advantages or disadvantages?

go with the 3770K, actually there are not reason to buy a 4c/4t chip if you are planing to keep it for long time.. games are starting to use more threads so those 4c/8t will last longer for sure.. also the 3770k will be better for productivity/media work and of course VMs.. my vote would be to the 3770k.. that will be a huge upgrade over your setup ando also its less painful overclock =)

Delete. I need to pay closer attention to product numbers..

I don't care so much about overclock. I run a Hyper 212+ with Bitfenix fans, so I'm going to be somewhat limited there. As soon as I realized the 4690k cant run 8t, I drecided on the 3770K for more threads. I did screw up, though. The 3770 is $100 more than the 4690k

Op, in what country are you located? So I can compare prices and such.

If you live near microcenter, they have 4790ks on sale for $279.99.

Unless the 3770k you're eyeballing is "cheap", I can't recommend that cpu (quite old and dead chipset). 4770k or 4790k's plus z97 motherboards are more attractive options.

Edit: $300 is your budget for total upgrade?

Yes. Total upgrade: $300

Amazon has 4690k for $239, which is the same price as the 4670k. Unfortunately, it's not a 4c/8t CPU. Would I be better off looking into AMD 6c/8c? I really want to get away from them if possible. I feel like I can do better.

Fx8350's are very good cpus for running multiple vms. However, the 990fx chipset is a dinosaur at this stage.

4690k's support vt-d if I'm not mistaken.
