Curious what would be a good upgrade from using a 8800gt 512mb card, something that'd be alot better but not break the bank in terms of cost?

Seems like the general consensus from everyone on posts similar to yours is to wait for the new generation of cards. Which supposedly is not far away. I personally cant help a ton, but to upgrade from my 8800gt 512mb i got the gts250, so far with COD4 i seem a improvement, it plays at a steady frame rate of 60fps on full high settings and 1980x1050. I do wish i got the gtx260 - 216core or w/e it is. Supposedly iv heard as far as low-mid range 200 series , that its the best.

If you play at 1680x1050, and can use SLI, another 8800GT would be a very cheap upgrade that would serve you well. Any higher resolution gaming/AA would necessitate a 896/1GB card such as the 260/216 or the 4870 1GB.

The 4870 1GB kills everything I play. I recommend it at $140 new for an XFX model.

What res do you play at and what is your budget?

+1 for this information, as well as letting us know what games you play with as well.

Complete system specs would help, but my initial recommendation would be to wait for the new generation cards to come out and then make a decision.
