I recently upgraded from a 775 build (q9550) to an 1155 build (3570k) and have enjoyed a huge jump in fps on Guild Wars 2. Most of this I attribute to going from PCIe 1.0 to 3.0. My 5870 runs at PCIe 2.0 and I am now wondering what kind of jump I would see if I upgraded to a PCIe3.0 card. From what I can see at hwcompare.com and on other various bench marks I don't really see a card out there that has huge gains from the 5870. Has anyone recently upgraded their 5870 on a 1155 platform and seen a huge FPS jump? If so, what card did you get? Ohh, btw I am still gaming at 1680x1050.

Your jump was primarily due to the CPU change......is my wager.;)

If you plan to use 1050p then I'm not sure you need to upgrade your GPU, unless you can't get all the graphical extras you want.

For example......my daughter jumped from a 5850 to a 6950 running at 1050p and saw about a 15 FPS increase in Borderlands2.......that said both cards could run full-out graphical options.

You will see some crazy increases in FPS if you buy a 7950 or 7970, but I'm not sure it will/would impact your IQ one little bit at that resolution.:D

fyi, likely your boost in framerate was the cpu and ram speed bumps instead of moving from pcie 1 to 3.

With that said though, likely your best bet for upgrade would have to be at least a 660 ti or greater from the green side or a 7950 or 7970 right now. Personally, my 5870 is staying put until at least the next gen, as it still runs all my games at 1680x1050 without issue.

edit: magoo beat me to it!

thx for the reply magoo, guess i'll run this 5870 into the ground.

How much of an investment do you wish to make toward gaming? If you want a WOW factor, go to a 27" 2560*1440 monitor if you are considering a video card upgrade. As magoo said you will be overpowering that 1680*1050 monitor.

The other issue is money and timing.
1. Black Friday is a few weeks away. This will drop prices a bit as it usually does.
2. The 8xxx series is due to be out Q1 2013 - Q2 at latest based on what Nvidia does. the release of new models brings MORE power while reducing the price of older models.

I am running 2 5870's on an 1156 platform and recently went to 2560*1440. Since Guild Wars in not a run-N-gun game it will be an impressive upgrade.

There are a number of cheaper monitors out there that range from about $500-$300 Nixeus, Auria, Acheiva Shimian, Yamakasi Catleap to name a few will do the job. You can play at what ever resolution you want on a 27" screen that the card you have and you can accept. I would do that first and then get the card later. The monetary outlay for both right now will be from $650-$1000. by waiting till Black friday you might save $50-$75 off of that(from the card, I do not think these monitors will be discounted). If you wait until the new HD 8xxx AMD cards are introduced you might save about $100-$150 on a 7970 OR pay about $499 for a HD 8xxx card which is suppose to be 25-40% faster than the current lineup.

I would look into these monitors first before spending any more $$$
