I want to upgrade from the 5850 I currently I have. Should I get another 5850 or should I just sell it and use that to get a newer card?

wow, you need to give WAY more info. please list ALL your specs in detail including what resolution you play at.

I would hold out for the 7xxx series at this point in time. You can do it, just takes discipline. :)

I was thinking of upgrading from my 5850(stock sapphire 1g) also. Currently have it in my 2600k @ 4.5 and I game at 1080p. Doesn't seem like I'd get much benefit yet. Main concern was Skyrim and BF3.

Any word on the 7k release window?

/Grab another one used for cheap or wait until the 7XXX series is released.

Unless you're running a very high resolution, you're not going to see huge gains from upgrading to a newer card, even an HD6970 will only offer a 30% increase at 1920x1200 or below. Crossfire will offer you more, but is quite a lot of hardware to be using for the performance increase. If you do really need extra performance now, get another HD5850, otherwise wait until the HD7900s arrive in about 6 months' time.

Next gen cards are still a little while away.. if you can score a 5850 cheap it might be good to hold you over for a while.. then you can sell both and get the new card when it comes out.

The problem is with 5850 at 1440sp 32ROP 256bit DDR5, upgrading to the newer 6900 cards mainly nets you higher clocks and marginal speed increase. The extra 1gb isnt too useful at your reolution. Get a Nvidia gtx580 if you want something noticeably faster and cannot wait. Otherwise overclock the best you can and wait for the next gen cards. Btw, a 5850 at 1000mhz generally perform similar to a 6970 at 900mhz except when tessellation is used.

Depends on the game, often a GTX580 isn't that much faster than an HD6970, even at 1920x1200.

If your itching for better graghics in game then pick up another 5850 to do cf, If not just wait for new series of gpu

another 5850 wont really help in some demanding games because 1gb of vram will limit performance and the available settings anyway.

Thats only if your gaming highier resolution than 1080p or 1200p(I forgot which one) and more than one monitor.. If you have a single monitor(1200 or 1080)cf 5850 should be sufficient to play some of the demanding games right now.

I just upgraded from a 5850 to a 6950. Mainly for BF3 and Skyrim etc. As soon as I saw BF3 using 1.5GB of vram, I knew I had to upgrade. I was going to hold out but did not. My plan is to add a second 6950 soon to Xfire.

not always true. even at 1680, I can easily go over 1gb of vram in demanding games with settings just a single gtx570 can handle. heck even at 1280x960, I can go over 1gb in a few games.

Did you notice any decent fps increase ? I'm in the same boat with a 5850 and got the itch. Thinking about a gtx570, but undecided.

In Battlefield 3 that's about a 30-40% increase at 1920x1200. Is that worth it to you? :)

a 6950 is only about 20% faster than a 5850 so I doubt he noticed too much difference.
