i will be receiving my U2711 very soon and wish to update my vga card, what's the best deal now in the market?

the last time i check was 2008 during that period 4870 just came out :)

Is that an e6600 or q6600? Have you overclocked it at all?

Do you have a preference of AMD/nVidia?

GTX460 wouldnt be that big of an upgrade. An overclocked 1 GB version could be but in my opinion, youll need to get to a 5850, GTX470 or 6870 before it would be worth it. A 4870 is still a very decent card even today so youll need to drop $200 minimum to get a worthy successor.

at 2560x1440 you are going to want at least gtx470 power or better if you like to run higher settings. if that is a Q6600 then you really need to oc it a bit to go along with a high end gpu. I hope that isn't an E6600 though because you will really need to upgrade that cpu if you want the most out of a high end card.

Q6600. will oc if needed.

yeah i hear you, well that's make a more difficult decision to made. lol

i ain't fan-boy of either brand, but decent price with perfect support on 2560x1440 will be great.

What's your budget? A pair of 6850 in CFX should be able to power that 2560 resolution. I don't think a single 460 is enough for that resolution to be honest. Also make sure that your PSU can power a dual card or single powerful gpu solution.

I'm in the same boat as you (30" coming, poor 4870 512mb needs an upgrade.)
Eying the 580GTX or AMD6970. Using i7 860.

i have a fry's $150 gift card to spend ^^
should able to spend another $100 after i sell the 4870

should i wait until next week?

Wait longer than that.
In my honest opinion, the only cards worth upgrading to are the top end models from both companies. 460gtx would be a stupid upgrade. On paper it might look OK at best, but its really not that big of an upgrade.

$280 with "double" lifetime warranty...
you have to be fucking kidding. paying 280 bucks for a any 6870 much less a stock reference one is about stupid. he can buy a gtx460 for over 100 bucks cheaper and oc it to basically same level of performance.

lol +100000
It's the FTW effect....except that one isn't even factory overclocked, it's just overpriced because of a silly double lifetime warranty
