So a friend of mine is offering to sell his two evga 260 GTX to me for $240. I feel it would be a good upgrade from my 8800gt’s (in sli), however would the money be better spent on a new single card (280 GTX?? or 4890)? What do you guys think?

What resolution were you playing at? If it is less than 1920x1200 a single card might be a better way to go.

i tend to keep my res low because my screen is only 19" plus i like to crank settings (AA type settings) high. so for a lot of games its at 1024x768, yes i know its sad.

so a single card at that res would be better?

A single card would be more than enough to max out everything at that resolution. Depending on your budget a single GTX 260 would do the job nicely and anything above it would just be overkill. A single GTX 260 would probably handle your monitors native resolution with everything cranked no problem. My single 260 handled 1680x1050 beautifully (no I don't play Crysis).

Agreed.

but lets say i upgraded to a nice 24" screen and because of that increased my res, would the 2 260s run higher res much better then the 2 8800gt? im just wondering if its worth the upgrade

if you upgrade to a nice 24" then yes its worth the upgrade but if you plan to stick with the 19" gaming @ 10x7 res, a single gtx260 is overkill for that res already IMO

at that res 1 8800gt should be enough for most if not all games, but $240 for a 260 is a bit high considering you can get them new for like $160.

I use 9600gt's in sli at 1920x1200 and it maxes out L4D with the lowest dips during hordes with fire is about 40fps so says fraps. Your 8800gt's are better than my set up so seriously no need for an upgrade at all.

though you might be able to sell your 2 8800gt's for the price of 1 260gtx in which case go for it

If you decide to upgrade to 24" than you could even get by with a single GTX260 if you can live with some toned down AA settings here and there on some newer games.

who the hell still plays at 10x7??? SLI 8800GT's to run a rez i ran in 1995? 1 GTX 260 will run 1920x1200 (24" LCD) with no problems for any game except crysis. you might not be able to max out FSAA but everything else will be maxed assuming you have a recent CPU and 2GB+ ram

why am I seeing almost no difference in processing power between 260 gtx sli vs 8800gt sli, when comparing them on the tomshard charts? are they really that close in power?

I would buy the cards for sure. Then make your next upgrade a monitor. 24 inch monitors can be had for ~$300.
