Ok heres the scenario: He uses his comp mostly for gaming like CS:Source. He will be taking it to college too. He doesnt do any video editing or naythign like that.
hes got a gig of ram and a 9500pro GPU(a lil long in the tooth but one step at a time)

My friend has a P4 2.4ghz procesor in asus p4g8x mother board and he wants to upgrade the cpu to this. http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=19-116-172&depa=0
Thats the fastest proc his motherboard will allow.

Would be be better of doing that or doing this

http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=19-103-425&depa=1 amd athlon 3000+ 64bit

and a http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=13-136-147&depa=1
^is that a good mobo Im not to sure

so either the new intel proc and old mobo for 215ish or the amd setup for 230ish

Or should we spend a lil more and get the s939 version of the amd stuff

Also how much will the new setup help him compared to the old for each setup

Thanks a ton.

No, don't do the AMD setup. Obviously he wants a high-powered machine, and to be honest socket 754 is at the end of it's rope. Socket 939 are the new 64-bits, and its of course more epxensive. I would say go with the intel processor.

I completely agree with Decker87. Go with the Intel.

Any other opinions??? I was favoring more towards the AMD setup then the upgraded proc.

If a s939 3000+ and some $100 mobo was also a option would that be the best route?
Thanks
