Updating The DC Subsection

Some of you may have noticed I was finally able to finish updating the Horde DC FAQ Sticky. I've found a few more things that seem to be a bit outdated as well and am trying to work with the moderators and original posters (if they are still around) to also get those threads updated.

So I'd like to ask for a little help as I am still pretty new to this myself and we also have some of the smartest people in the DC world here...

As far as updating the information throughout the subsection. I'd really appreciate any help from people who find any old/outdated threads/guides that are old/outdated and need to be updated or maybe so old they they no longer apply. I want to make sure if people are looking for help that we are not steering them in the wrong direction. As the #1 team in the world on many fronts, people come to us from all over looking for help.

World Community Grid! I'll be the first to say I know very little about you guy's side of the house. I tried to do the best I could with the information I had but my knowledge of what you guys do isn't the greatest. As quite a few of our members are now participating in it, I think itd be worth taking the time to add some more information. If you guy's have any idea's on things that could be added to the FAQ Sticky or want to type of something and have me add it it, please let me know (Gilthanis Im looking at you ;) )

I've also spoken to Pocatello and he would like to start updating the DCOTM thread on a regular basis. I know we no longer "interview" the winners, and quite frankly most of us know each other quite well anyways, but it would be nice to have a thread where we can look back and see who has won. In order to accomplish this update I'd ask that anyone who has won DCOTM/DCOTY within the past year to shoot me a PM letting me know the month/year you won. I understand I could search through threads and find this information but I'm trying to juggle quite a few things right now and it would just be easier if those people shot me a PM. Once we can get all this information together we can update the the winner's thread and try to keep it alive.

Lastly, we are always looking for more guides that will benefit the team. Ill be working on some more myself in the near future but for now I have a request. I'd like to see if anyone who currently, actively uses the Windows V7 F@H GUI Client to write up a step by step guide, with pictures for the associated steps, so that we can actually have a legit guide for it. It might also be good to add some of the Flags we all use for GPUs and throw in some tips that you've found to be useful. If you're interested in doing this, please let me know.

Appreciate all the support.

m33pm33p, I would be more then happy to help wherever I can. It seems that a few of our Commandos members have been absent as of late, but I will see if anyone has anything that they would like to add. Kai suggested making some kind of a fund for the Commandos to contribute to in order to help members get what they need. If the Horde has any suggestions on this, we would love the expertise. I will try and find some time to look through the FAQ as well.

I am a newb to [H]ard|Forum but I have only used the Windows client. I just started looking into all the great info you all have placed here to find out more about the Folding Appliance and have already started messing with Ubuntu on current hardware before I invest in 2P/4P. So, although I am a newb, I could offer some assistance to the Win Client Guide; Although I don't think I can post any attachments yet according to my status.

The client seems pretty user-friendly compared to previous clients.

I got everything up and running a few weeks ago and am already turning WU's for around 450kppd on available/accessible hardware.

I had also noticed while looking through profiles that there used to be a [H]ard|DCer of the month Social Group. It seems to have been abandoned. http://hardforum.com/group.php?groupid=72

Another good idea. Ill see what we can do about that or if there is still any interest in it.

Welcome to the team!

Newbie or not, if you think you have the time to put together a guide I'll help you with the information you need. No one is really able to post "files" to the site but I can give you my email address through PM.

Shoot me a PM if you're interested and I'll give you my thoughts.

What is wrong with the Horde Central v7 guide? It has steps and pictures. If you want an advanced guide for the various flags to use, that is fine. I think that a basic guide that doesn't get bogged down in the flags and advance configuration needs to stay, and what is in Horde Central was what W.Feather and I came up with.

The OP of the V3 FAQ has long since been inactive and that thread had NUMEROUS outdated/erroneous/no longer useful links throughout it. Rest assured I tried to keep as much of the original thread in tack as I could. I simply groomed it for things that needed to be removed. Please note that this wasn't something I did on a whim. The people who needed to be contacted were and my rough drafts were ran through WFeather as well. I completely agree that we should keep a simple how to on the V7 setup guide, however this forum isnt dedicated to F@H, it's dedicated to DC. As I dont want to have to make a FAQ that is 5-6 pages long by adding a "Quick Setup Guide" for each individual DC project, I felt it would be better suited if we (much like I did the other projects on that page) had a link to a guide, with step by step instructions and pictures, for the setup of the V7. At the end of that guide I pictures and advanced tips/tricks section and that would be where the "Advanced Flags" would be.

That is awesome! Thanks much!

This, I think the basic one should be in the central, however a more detailed/indepth guide with flags and explanations = good to go IMO.

edit: Maybe make a post in the central for F@H, and one for DC Vault / BOINC.

I can start on the Advanced Control portion. I'll post a link to a Google document in a few days as I get enough content for some critiques.

While this is a valid option and ultimately, that sticky will be whatever the community wants. My thought is why have a guide in a FAQ section that also has a guide? If we are going to have a full setup guide in the FAQ for windows, why not for Linux? Why not for DIMES, BOINC, SETI and the list goes on.

That is why I am pushing towards having it as I was saying. A place for FAQ that points to these guides.

I also think that adding pictures to a guide would help tremendously. A lot of us are very technical savy but some are not. Having a step by step guide with pictures for each step would help those who are not. I understand there was a link to pictures after the setup guide but I think it would come out much smoother if those pictures and the steps in the guide were intermingled.

I would be willing to help fill out a picture guide to V7 of the windows client and including the core x17 gpu beta flag setup etc.

You missed me! What's wrong with us 2011 winners? No Tamales for You!

m33pm33p asked for winners in the last year, so that's what I gave him.

No tamales for me? You suck. :p

m33pm33p just wanted to see his name in the winners bracket, - 1 tamale since he does not care about the rest of us. But he gets an even dozzen for his work here -1 for shunning the previous winners =11 for now. :D

Well, how about I take m33pm33p's tamales away and give them to you. :D

Yeap, sadly you 2011'ers are old news.

I think I asked for those specifically because thats when the last thread stopped being updated. Ill check again and find the rest.

No worries, thank you for taking on the update.

There might be tamales in your future. :D ;)

That's exactly the thread im speaking of updating. Ive contacted Pocatello and we are working to not only update it but keep it running again. There's a few other things such as the DCOTM/DCOTY [H] Group and what not but Im not too sure anyone is interested in that anymore or if its really anything useful.

It might be worth revising the DC FS/FT rules thread - http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=975902
Currently it only references F@H badges and points, so it would seem anyone doing any other DC such as BOINC projects would be effectively excluded from being able to sell there, due to potentially not having a badge or F@H points.

I concur. It's something Ive brought up to WFeather and I believe he is working on it.

Now that he has been promoted to God Of All Forums he is a bit busy though.

Its definitely something that hasnt been updated in a long, long time.

Me? Look at something :p

ya, its been in the back of my mind, being hit with an exam a week atm, be a week or two till I can get something rolling on adjusting the rules to be more .... up with the times

(Thanks for throwing me under the bus m33p :p)
