burning cd stalls after (20-30% burn). nero tech says problem may be caused by my dell dimension 4500 ultra ata 66 controller. suggests updating mainboarddrivers well. i would prefer to avoid using dell 'tech' resources, (language - competence issues). is there anything i can do to update system as nero recommends or settle for the tech facility? please advise.

Well, you could always get an add-in ata controller card, pick up another HD and connect your burner to that.

OR

You could have a really crappy first gen burner in there that extremely susceptible to buffer underun errors. A simple upgrade to a newer model might fix the issue.

Something else you should check is to make sure that your drives are functioning in DMA mode and not PIO mode. It will make a huge difference in speed and performance.

Additionally, if you computer is as old as it sounds, it shouldn't be doing anything else when you are trying to burn a disk. Make sure everything else is off (inc screen saver) and try a burn that way.

I don't feel that this is an incompatibility issue. That PC should be able to burn CDs just fine. Nero is also the best software available, so that's not the problem. As mentioned, post the CD-RW drive you have and if it's running in PIO or DMA mode.
