So yesterday, when I got home from picking my truck up at the mechanic:rolleyes: i went into my bedroom and heard what sounded like a hair dryer coming from my computer. Normally my computer is rather quiet, as I built it to be so.

I took off the side panel and realized there was some extra noise coming from the power supply (Antec Truepower Trio 650W) and at that point decided to stop my SMP, save my girlfriend's homework, and shut down the computer until further checking could be done. I have heard bad things about power supplies in the past.

So I took out the power supply and set it next to the computer and hooked everything up, in a hope to isolate the noise. Long story short, I ended up taking the top off the power supply and setting the fan next to the inner workings and starting everything. The fan was the culprit. It seems to have suddenly gone from not noticeable to noisy as crap. :mad:

As of now I feel like the computer is ok to use, but just annoying to listen to. My SMP will have to be off about 50% of the day for sleeping and no one being home, but I should still make deadlines.

Question portion:

Am I correct in assuming everything should be ok, as long as I can put up with fan noise for the time being?

Can I just replace the fan without any problems? I think it might have had a 3 pin connector on it, but I am not entirely familiar with those things, so I may have been wrong.

Would I just be better off getting a new power supply?

If I should just get a new power supply, which one should I go with? I know I want 80+ certified. I would like to be able to eventually get a quad core and OC it, and I want to be able to buy a new video card soon (maybe not AS soon anymore). I was hoping to pick up the 9800GTX+ around when it comes out. What kind of wattage would that need? Would 450 be a good minimum for that kind of setup?

1- if only the fan become noisy, you should be fine since fan noise is often unrelated to psu issues (unless the fan die and cause heat to build up in the psu). A noisy fan is often a sign of a dieing fan or just needing lubrication.

2- Before replacing, try to peel off the sticker to show the hub. Just pour a few drops of sewing machine oil (or any other light oil you might have) then run it to see if the noise disappear. If it doesn't, replace it. Lots of them have a connector for that but there is also a lot which is directly soldered unfortunately.

3- If yours is not a 80plus psu, it might be worth the expense to buy a new 80plus psu like the Antec Earthwatts, Corsair VX series or Seasonic S12 series. This also answer your 4th question and my advice is to look at least a 430w minimum.

 
I think I have decided what I am going to do. I have a few other fans and a controller I was hoping to buy soon. I am gonna go ahead and make that purchase I believe. I will go ahead and replace the fan in the PSU with this Sythe S-Flex. Hopefully that's the ticket to success. I looked at some power supplies but they are decidedly more expensive than a fan, so I will try that first.

Does that sound about right? Will that work?

Should.... and you can always reuse the fan.

 
/Order placed. 4 fans 2 flash drives and a fan controller. I haven't ordered from Newegg in so long. I haven't felt this excitement in a while!!! Oh yay!

 
Yeah, no problem doing that way. You can always use the fan for other purposes if that didn't help with your psu noise.

 
Update Update:

I got my parts yesterday and installed them all. Holy shit. Those Scythe fans are amazing. The Fan controller, superb. When I started the computer and they were going full blast, the computer sounded like a wind tunnel. After tuning them all down to around 1000 rpm, the sound was almost silent and the airflow was still spot on. The air being sucked through the front grilles was for the first time very noticeable to me. I have a feeling I will have to clean the dust filters more often now! That's great though. Temps are down, I might bump my OC a bit now. :D
