Update stand-alone ESX 4 server - how to?

Happy New Year folks!

So I googled and googled and even bing'ed some, no dice. How do I update a stand alone ESX4 server to ESX4U1?

The vSphere Host Update Utility 4.0 only works on ESXi from what I read, and I certainly tried it on ESX yet it didn't work. The VMWare Infrastructure Update equally refuses to update my ESX4 host. I opened an SR but I figure I may post here as well and see who's faster, Gold Support or [H]-members! ;)

Will post the solution if the SR goes through first.
