Update Cisco IOS?

I bought a 3548XL switch off ebay for real cheap. I am configuring it right now for home use, mainly to play with.

It has IOS 12.0 and doesn't support even some basic commands, like int ranges or even the do command in global config mode. And it doesn't seem to support VLANs either.

I have looked through Cisco's site and couldn't find what I was looking for. I dont know if my switch supports the newest IOS, or which version IOS that it does support. The switch isn't listed in the IOS software advisor.

Anybody have any ideas?

interface ranges weren't supported until I think 12.1

What ideas are you looking for?

That model switch reached its end of support back in 2007 I believe. You will not be able to run the latest IOS version on it. The last IOS version that is out for it is 12.0.5-WC17. Here are the release notes for that version.

Wicked old. It should support VLANs. You probably have to use the "vlan database" command though.

That is the answer I was looking for. Thank you for your time. I was under the impression that Cisco would list ALL of their models in the software advisor, including old retired models. I was wrong. I am pretty sure it has that version IOS on it already.

I haven't heard of that command. I will have to look in to it. It is definitely old, but I thought it would be worth the $10 it was listed for, at least for some extra experience at the house.

12.0 on the old 2948s doesn't support show int desc :-(
