Well, my 4 week old ATI HD 4870 when south on me.

I checked my system before bed..all was fine.

Woke up, and my system was off. It tired to boot the system and go noting.

I opened up the case, and smelled a hint of smoke but could not determine where it was coming from.

I pulled the 4870 and ran off my secondary card (x1650) and the system booted back up fine.

If I put the card in the system, no boot. So I assume it has died on me???

Does this sound like the video card problem to you guys?

Got an RMA in now ....

You just made an offering to the folding gods :D

We will have good WU for the next month ;)

I think the leaking Helium from the LHC project may have found it 's way into the servers and was errantly uploaded to you via Stanford upon the GPU folding completion.

Or the suden electrical spike form Sunin shutting down his farm was too much for your poor 4870.

Or I need less beer tonight....

Yep. That sounds like a dead video card. Only other thing you could try is putting the assumed bad card in another functioning system and see if you get the same result.

Not a good week for ATI cards. My 3870 after many a WU has crashed several times this week. (At least thats what I think caused it at this point.) I suspect that she doesnt have too much longer. :D

Evil - Do you still have your 4850's? How did you like those?

Was the noise/temps acceptable when folding? I was thinking about picking one up at BB this week since they are $149. :)

I still think chickens are cheaper... AND more effective. ;):D

That stinks (no pun intended) EA. Hopefully it's still in warranty.

I have 2 x 4850 but mine are HIS ICEQ 4580's which runa lot cooler.
The stock visiontek 4850 are solid cards but run a little hotter then mine.

The BB deal is a solid one.

The HIS IceQ fans are dead quiet. The stock 4850 fan is quiet until about 60% run speed.

After cross referencing the Mayan calendar with the local Iroquois shaman and a back-alley astrologer named "Buddy" living in a box behind the liquor store, I have become convinced that the cause of the recent video card folding deaths is micro-aliens living in the threads of #8-32 computer screws who use the magic smoke in the video cards to make jerky out of dust mites.

This is the word of the Fold.
Thanks be to Kyle.

Sorry about your luck. Try to keep the magic smoke in the replacements. They work better that way.

Buy 'em and fry 'em

... you hittin' my beer too? Let's go over to Sunin's new palace and plant some sacrificial chickens...

It takes more exotic substances than beer to be in tune with such far-reaching and insightful phenomena.

Relic has been after the scotch again......what was your brand again?

Up in Smoke, a really good clasic movie but not what you want in your computer.

Just curious, what PSU were, are, you using at the time?

Very often too little power does as much damage as too much, in fact it's all but impossible to have too much power;)

EA, you know the answer when magic smoke is accidentally released ?

Right, more "D" !!!

Glenfiddich of course. :)
Two fingers with a teaspoon of water, please.

Already Taken care of .. Ordered 2 more HIS ICEQ 4850s yesterday

The best thing to do is have a bottle of the magic smoke handy for just such emergencies. I've always bought the blue stuff. It's more expensive, but works better than the white stuff.
