All those foam sound insulation kits made for the computer are pretty expensive. But I've come accross something abundantly available and cheap. Corkboard tiles found in the office supplies isle. One square foot per tile and roughly 4mm thick.

But how well will corkboard deaden the whine from case fans, and would it effect my case thermally?
 
It proably wouldn't have too much effect on your temps, because your case probably doesn't conduct much heat by itself. As long as you have good airflow. I'm not sure how good it would be at dampening, though...

It works suprisingly well, but I wouldn't reccomend if it you have a particularly hot computer or care about the looks ;) Double thick cardboard works fairly well too, I used that in my computer for a while before I rebuilt it and took it out because it looked bad.
 
office ceiling tile is also good... if you don't care about looks... it's availible dirt-cheap at lowe's and home depot.
 
My case doesnt have a window so looks are not an issue. And I'm only planning on doing the left side panel and maybe the floor since they're the largest bare surfaces, so I don't think temps will be a problem.

It's Kraft paper = mega dust when it breaks down unless you seel it with varathane of fiberglass resin...Lived in a town with a Kraft Mill...

Carpet underlay is also a cheap alternative.

Cork is nice though.
