I need DDR2 2 x 1gb

i want to run a Conroe E6650 1333MHZ FSB, do i get 800 and under clock it to 667 w/ lower timings or just get 667 and run it at stock timings

i am looking in the Mushkin HP range, but will go XP if it warrants the 30 dollar price diff, and i dont plan to OC since the conroes own just about anything out there

heres a few links

HP

XP

if you have other suggestions for like OCZ or A DATA they would be appreciated

TIA

the conroe is not much better than a dual core AMD until you overclock it. buy the best RAM you can afford.

maybe you didnt understand the question or just didnt read my post... Mushkin is one o the best that is why i am looking at them. i am just unsure whether i should get 667mhz or 800mhz and if the XP warrants a 30 dollar difference from the HP

yes, the ALLENDALE (which is what you have) is no better than a dual core AMD. i ll be gettin the CONROE E6650 which keeps up with TOP OF THE LINE AMD's for a fraction of the cost

*scratches head* .. didn't know intel had a 6650. or did you mean the 6600? :)

it all depends on what motherboard you plan to use .. I'm running ocz 667 ram @ 667 (333*2), and my 6600 is at 3.0ghz on a asus p5n-e, which is then at 1333fsb (333*4) I could probably go higher but, eh, don't care to.

So, to answer your question, you can run 667 ram if you only want to hit a 1333 FSB. But, faster ram is always better if you want to overclock more. And generally speaking, less speed ram will overclock with more voltage or looser timings.

Also, some boards are VERY picky with ram, my old ds3 being a good example. This p5n-e seems to be pretty tolerant of anything, but .. research the board before ya buy the ram to make sure it's compatible.

the E6650 comes out in the next couple weeks.

mobo will be ASUS either P5B or P5K depending on whether it can run DDR2 AND DDR3

667 for me! thanks now is the XP worth 30 dollars?

yeah, it's a CONROE, n00b.

faster memory is better so buy the fastest you can get. hope that clarifies it a little for you.

keeps up with doesn't = owns either, dunno where you got that idea from.

Personally I think you are approaching this MEM choice thing completely bass-ackwards...

However before we go into that I want to discuss the pointlessness of waiting on the E6650.....

Barring unannounced changes the E6650 will run at 2.33MHz (0.67MHz slower than an E6600) on a 1333MHz FSB. This means it will be using a 7x CPU multiplier (1333/4*7= 2333MHz). Other than the FSB it will apparently be the same as the current E6XXX series CPU's.

So, if you buy an E6320 today and run it at 1333MHz then you will effectively have precisely the same things as an E6650. In addition, if you do wait and get an E6650 and later decide to OC then, as with most E6300's today, the OC limit of the CPU will almost definitely be your motherboard more than the CPU itself, while an E6420 with it's 8x multiplier will be far less susceptible to this issue, and the E6600 even less so at 9x.

Regardless, your approach to the MEM issue is wrong. Mushkin is great and all, but so are a TON of other stick makers. These days the actual performance difference is almost always tied to the chips and cooling being used, not to the manufacturer of the stick. Therefore there are only two rules these days... Chose the right IC (chip) and don't chose one of the very few actually bad manufacturers.

In addition you WILL see some benefit to higher clocked Asynchronous RAM, as shown on pages 4 through 7 of the article below....

http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/memory/display/core2duo-memory-guide_8.html

Therefore I would seriously suggest you get PC-6400, and preferably the cheapest guaranteed Micron D9 based PC-6400 you can find. Below is a list of RAM sticks by manufacturer and the chips used in those sticks of RAM if known. However I can tell you now that Buffalo Firestix (D2C version) are the lowest price D9's you will find.

yeah, it's a CONROE, n00b.

i don't take kindly to flaming in my forum :p
conroes with 2mb cache are essentially allendales afaik, but this is memory forum, not intel. ;)

anyway, arentol, i agree with what you say, under one condition: the OP is overclocking. which he said he isn't. thus the higher fsb will negate the lower clock speed, and the two should be roughly equal. i'd personally advise whichever is cheaper myself.

for the memory itself, any ddr2-667 will work. even some cheap value ram *cough* http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1178407

now heres a info worth posting THANKS ALOT. i ll check out your list, i was always under the impression 2 sticks of dual channel MHZ equal to FSB = optimum performance (thats how long its been since ive built a computer haha). and i have always ran MUSHKIN since they never gave me probs didnt know what else was out htere hehe

thanks Eclipse for the other list also i ll see which chip is cheaper at launch but i thikn they were supposed to be of equal price

and mr M3, call it what you want, whatever helps you sleep at night i guess, i ll go by what intel says "4mb cache B2 stepping = CONROE." E6650 is the SLOWEST CONROE (going by intel standards) keeps up with top of the line AMD's
