i have a x800xt. it doesnt matter if i turn my settings on MAX or LOW i get consistent 100+ fps in cs, but at times it jumps down to 35..

heres my monitor specs if it has to do with anything..
Acer AL1916W running cs @ 1280 x 800 @ 75 hz

Is this in CS:S or CS1.6? Because it's a little normal to drop fps in CS:S, but if you're running CS 1.6, something's not right. A powerful card like yours really should be able to keep it at 100fps all the way. Even my 9700pro did it at the res you use.

its not the card, its:

A: your rates
B: your CPU
C: your internet connection.
D: smoke grenades

A: usually isnt a drop to 25fps, its a drop to 2fps, to fix it:
go to console, and type in:

rate 7500
Cl_cmdrate 30
Cl updaterate 20
net_graph 3 (this is optional but it will tell you what console is thinking to turn it off type net_graph 0)

B: a background app springs to life, on a dual core proc thats not a problem, on a single core proc you might had a sever drop to a stable fps.

C: poor internet connection can occasionally give you lag, technically your gfx card is spewing out 60fps but your internet is only getting the bandwith for 25 of em. this happens when again, a networking app springs to life.

D: smokes are insanly powerful for such an old game. they basically use several hundred layers, each with a slight grayness to them, meaking for areas at the center being grey, and areas at the boarders being more see-thru.0

i might add, its impossible for your setup to get 100fps, cuz the refreash rate is only 75 fps, as such console will say its displaying the game at 74.99 fps most of the time.

Ewwww with those rates I would own you. haha!

I had this happen to me, with my 6800Ultra a LONG time ago though, no idea how to fix it but I did.

WAIT nvm, it was on my 9800XT, but I fixed it.

Is Vsync turned on in either your video settings in game or in the driver settings for that game?

it does not matter if Vsync is on or off.. but to answer your question. yes its on for now. b/c i find it smoother

So are you saying you tried it on and off, and it still happens?

It does matter, if your video card cannot render the scene fast enough so that the FPS is always above your monitors refresh rate then your frame rate will be slashed in half.

For example if your monitors refresh rate is 60Hz then if your video card ever slows down to under 60FPS then the frame rate will drop to 1/2 of the refresh rate, which is 30FPS, if it can't manage 30FPS then it will drop to 1/3 rd of the refresh rate or 20FPS

If the frame rate goes back up to above 60FPS the cap will raise to 60FPS

This jumping between 60fps, 30fps and 20fps (or even lower) is very noticeable and the prime reason people don't have Vsync on, otherwise Im sure more people would!

rates have nothing to do with fps. Not only that but you supplied him with default, aka bad rates.
rate 20000
cl_rate 9999
cl_cmdrate 101
cl_updaterate 101
ex_interp .01
all in a usercfg.cfg

i dont know what r_mmx 1 is suppose to do.. but nothing changed

it uses the processor's multimediaextension(mmx) support. It will do wonders for you in smoke.
