My friend's computer is having alot of trouble booting up. It's a Dell 5150 with a 20 gb HDD and takes literally five minutes to get through the XP loading screen. Once it does get past that, though, it BSODs. Whenever I try to boot into safe mode, it BSODs with a message like, unmountable_boot. Is his HDD completely shot? is there anything that can be done to salvage some of his work? any help is greatly appreciated.
 
You could try setting the Dell drive to slave then putting it in a working comptuer (as the slave drive) and see what you can access. Pull any good files from it that you can before you try to reformat and etc.
 
That sounds about the only thing you will be able to do. The HD's Dell seems to use have been going bad lately. Mostly Maxtor drives. Best advice anyone could probably give you is to put his HD in another operational computer and try to copy/burn what data you can access on it then format and hope that the drive isn't shot.
