Unmountable boot volume

trying to fix a friends puter and I got most of the kinks out with the hardware but now when I try to boot into xp it hangs...when I try to boot into safe mode I get a blue screen that says "UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME" and all that stuff. In the xp recovery console you can rewrite the boot sector...is that something I want to try?? if not what else should I try??
 
Try running chkdsk /r from the recovery console (it may take a while).

Also, if this is XP (non-service packed) then there is a supported fix on MS's website. That is, of course, assuming no other problems.
