Unmanaged client hypervisor?

Virtual Computing's nxTop was purchased by Citrix, leaving Windows 8 as the last remaining client hypervisor that doesn't require a server to manage it (like XenClient). However, Windows 8 won't really help me with this if I want to go the dual CPU route with a bucketload of RAM, since as far as I can tell, 8 doesn't support more than one CPU and 512GB of RAM (but this might be inaccurate...).

Are there any other players in the marketplace that do this that I might not have heard of yet? Any future plans from any vendors? I don't want separate boxen for productivity, game playing, and software development in VMs.
 
Also, would I get better performance from a network connected thin client over RDP than I would from the server console in Windows 2012 R2? I can't find any answers on this at all.
 
Thanks for your help, MysticRyuujin. You seem to be the only one that holds the fort here in the Virtualized Computing section against the noobie onslaught (me).

I think my final build will be a headless server using an IGEL thin client. Worst case scenario, I have a bitchin' VM server and still have to build myself a separate desktop in case the thin client route doesn't give me the experience that I want.

Windows 8.1 Pro (and Enterprise) supports 2 sockets and up to 512GB of RAM. So depending on your definition of a "bucketload of RAM" this might be sufficient for a Windows 8.1 Hyper-V based client.

Some additional information about your intended workload (# of VMs running concurrently , OS, RAM requirements, type of applications, ...) would make it a lot easier for people to give you reasonable advise.
 
My software testing environment consists of around 60 VMs with 1-2GB of RAM each, ranging from windows 7 up to server 2012 R2. It would be nice to have them running all concurrently which would help with testing long term stability and automatic updates.

My "desktop" VM would have at least 16 GB of RAM, since I have 8GB now and it's really painful. Interesting that 8.1 supports 2 CPUs and 512GB of RAM - that's a lot more than previous "consumer" OSs.

I must admit I don't know much about Windows 8.x, but does it really act like a type 1 client hypervisor like XenClient does? I thought it only had VirtualPC/XPMode type 2 functionality - though much better??

Anyhow ... I played with XenClient when it was free (2.1) and really had a hard time understanding the market for it when it seems everyone wants BYOD.
I think I am one of the few dinosaurs left carrying a full blown laptop around.

I can only think of the Military using it now days.

I don't know of anyone else who is trying client hypervisors at this time other than Citrix.
 
I do know for a fact that 8.1's virtualization is indeed type 1. However, the "management" OS gets special privileges somehow, and gets to act like a local install, even though it technically is virtualized just like the other VMs on the same hardware.

When you install the Hyper-V feature, the existing OS install becomes the Management OS and gets virtualized, but it acts like a normal computer locally.
