I search the forum for anything on this already, but I couldn't find anything. I was wondering what bridges to connect when unlocking a barton core? And also a recomendation for a filler for the gaps.
 
dont bother... bartons unless you bought one two years ago are locked... as in p4 style... no unlocking
 
i've read though that connecting a certain bridge will unlock it
 
only if you have a old one, the day amd started producing athlon-64(maybe hammer...) they locked them in the core.. not the substrate... gonna go modify transistors in the core? i think not... :p
 
use the wire in the socket trick if you do it.. its reversable
 
And if my processor is one with it locked in the core, and i connect the bridge....?

I have a barton 2500.. locked, it's new..

just wondering if unlocking it allows you to OC higher by having more volts and changin the fsb x multiplier settings? =o
 
your mobo should have the voltage options, but if its unlocked means you can up the multiplier.

Yeah It has softmenu in bios letting me change to OC... but I couldn't get the voltage up higher than 1.8 :-p must be my stock HSF lol:(

This trick won't work, neither will putting it in an nForce II Ultra mobo, these CPU's are hard locked at the factory.

what do CPU's being locked mean exactly =o what does it disable you to do

All motherboards give the option, the cpu won't take it into effect regardless, not weird at all.

There's an unlocking kit you can get for 12 dollars:

I cannot find a conductive pen + non conductive filler for less than 10 bucks so I consider this a good deal. It comes with everything you need to unlock. You should make sure you can unlock this cpu.

This kit will NOT work on Barton's sold after about the middle of 2004. they are hard locked. No kit, no wire, no, Speedstrip, no trick, no mobo will unlock them. Many have tried, all have failed.

Yeah, make sure you read that, but also find out how old your CPU is. It's abbrievated in code on the black label on your cpu. Write it in your thread if you care to, someone will tell you if you're out of luck.. or not :).

I've got an unlocked Barton 2500+ I bought in June of 2003. It's a great CPU. I got up to 2350mhz on air-cooling. Now it's sitting in the closet, since I went to A64.
 
It's still possible to change the multiplier on the hard locked processors, as long as you're willing to do extensive bridge modifications. I have a hard locked Applebred Duron that I converted to a mobile processor, then increased the maximum multiplier (L3s govern startup multiplier, L6s govern maximum multiplier, http://fab51.com/cpu/barton/athlon-e23.html this site is a good place to start). Once modified, I was able to change the multiplier through software in Windows using CPUMSR and CrystalCPUID (only one needed).

I used a sharp push pin to cut the bridges, and a rear window defogger repair kit to reconnect cut bridges. It now runs at 2.3ghz. :)
 
I'll post my model number closer to the end of Feb. I am switching to an si97 then and will check my proc then.

or just buy a mobile and re-sell the desktop for like $10 less, avoiding all that hastle was worth the $10 to me :)

Yup, getting a mobile isn't a bad idea at all. I did it primarily because I wanted a fast, cheap chip, and 38$ was a great price. :D
