unlocking processors

i have heard about "unlocking" non-mobile processors with a pencil, and m bros friend overclocked his processor, and i didnt get to watch but he asked me for a pencil so i assume thats "the pencil trick" to unlock it. So, does anyone know why you have to do this, and how to do it?
 
Unless I'm drunk, stupid or blind, I don't see what kind of processor you're talking about there... I think there are pencil tricks for some, not for others ;) I personally prefer a hat trick.
 
I would have to guess that you are referring to the Athlon and Athlon XP series of processors with the bridges surrounding the die. You can use a pencil to unlock a few of the earlier versions. Later versions required more 'extensive' methods.

I can't raise my cpu multi on my mobo, on either one. I can't change my htt multi, on either one.

My mobo is a DFI lan party f3 250 and, a gigabyte k8ns.

I see no changes on either board, except I can go a LOT further on the dfi, when, it co-operates.
 
Yes, the Multis on AMD64s are ownly downward unlocked, but the HTT is already unlocked. I too have a DFI Lanparty 250GB.... Under the Genie Bios menu, right under FSB, there should be an option to select the HTT Multiplier from 1.0x to 5.0x, oh, wise one.

And I thought he was talking about FSB and HTT multiplier... which he was talking about HTT multiplier.
