unlocking a 4-pin cpu fan??

Ok, my brother's stock Intel fan that came with his dual core CPU has a 4-pin plug.

The colors (in order) are: black, yellow, green, and blue (last/extra/4th pin).

How do I unlock the fan's speed? I don't care about the extra noise.

Im going to try to disconnect the control wire of the fan. Which I think will keep the fan rotating at max RPM. On the manual the pin connections are listed like this:

Pin Signal Name
1 Ground
2 +12V
3 Fan_Tach
4 Fan_Control

So it should spin at 100% when I disconnect the 4th wire, right?
It’ll generate a lot of noise but at least the temp will drop below 50C

Check for BIOS options to configure CPU fan control manual / off (whatever the setting is called).

What if that doesn't fully work? My brother has an NVIDIA 9600GT:

* When drivers and software are completely removed from the machine (used Driver Cleaner .NET too), the CPU fan control feature on the motherboard works (it makes it go at 100% when disabled).

* However, when the drivers are installed, the fan goes back to normal speed (goes from 100% to normal immediately as NVIDIA drivers are loaded at the Windows XP loading screen).

Weird, but this is the case. I want to make the fan go at 100%. :X

you are correct.. if you have the right wire diagram.. if you disconnect/cut the 4th wire.. the fan will be stuck at 100%.. the bios will no longer be able to control the fan speed..

also make sure in vista you dont have any of the power management stuff on.. that will also cause the fan to change speeds with the 4 wire/pin fans..
