unlocked 6950 overclocking question?

Can a unlocked 6950 overclock reach the same performance as a overclocked 6970?

was planning on getting another 6970 but am thinking of weather to go for a unlocked 6950 instead....
 
With overclocking the law of YMMV always applies. YMMV = Your mileage may vary.

Some 6950s can go really far on stock voltage, others may require a significant voltage bump to go really far. I still think you should go for the 6950 because of the advantages it has over a 6970 as far as power consumption etc..

Most 6950s should be able to reach 950-965mhz core clock whereas most 6970s can reach anywhere from 950mhz-1000mhz I've seem some 6950s and some 6970s go higher but those are very rare.

Keep in mind you may spend extra on a 6970 only to find that it can't OC past 930mhz. Same goes for 6950. You may find one of those that only goes to 915mhz. You never know really. Also not all 6950s will unlock. The PCB or card doesn't matter it's simply a matter of luck on the particular Cayman Pro GPU on the card. This even applies to the 1GB 6950s which have as much of a chance as unlocking as a reference 2gb. Again the board/vram amount etc.. doesn't matter.

Dual bios switches make it easier but keep in mind that even without a dual bios switch there are tricks that can be done to unlock any 6950 to date that wont void your warranty.
