University needs printer for photo id's

My university is looking for a new way to print id badges for the faculty for the use of athletic equipment on campus. They would be content with a simple Name, barcode, and image of the purpose. Then we can laminate it. Color printers that are good in the sub
$300 range?
 
Well... forgive me for completely ignoring your financial limit, but if I were you I would seriously look into buying a color laser. Better quality prints and even though they are twice your budget you are going to spend a LOT less on ink.

How many a week will you be printing up? Will it even be in use long enough to make your money back?

Sorry, I just HATE inkjet printers.
 
I know it's a lot more expensive, but in the long run you would probably be better off with an actual ID card printer. It's what I've seen used a lot more often now...no laminate. Looks much more professional.

sorry for taking so long to get back, i dont have internet at home so i have to wait til im back here. Im really not sure how many a week, but figure that it is a university of roughly 25,000 students, so with faculty, maintenance, and regular staff.

They would be busy for awhile
 
Hand lamanateing 25K printed id's is going to suck. After you count paper/ink/lamination/man hours I think you would be better off with a real ID printer. Think about it this way. Say you get 10 ID's on a page, which you then need to cut out and laminate, followed by you cutting the id's out of the laminate. Do you really have someone who will cut out 50K id's? (25k id's cut out twice) My hands hurt just thinking about that. There are many software/printer packages out there to do just what you need (but they do cost quite a bit more than 300$) that allow you to easially and quiclky batch create id's and store them in a database, allowing duplacates to be made with out hassell in case someone uses their id. I just dont see printing on plain paper and laminateing as a realistic solution with the number of id's you need.
 
My little college of 900 people has had an ID card printer for over 10 years. I'm sure today prices have gone down, and quality and options has gone up!

One question... if your university has 25,000 students, how do you make their ID cards? Couldn't you use the same for faculty and staff?
