Uninstalling a game.... without uninstalling.

Is there a way to uninstall a game without using the uninstall exe?

I decided to install Command & Conquer Generals. And I boldy tried to install it on a hard drive that I was having issues with in the past. I had run diagnostic software on the drive and reformatted it, so I was hoping it would be fine.

Now, the game runs insanely slow on it. *shrug* Ok, it's just a little 20 gig that's gotten a little old, I'll retire the thing. I tried to uninstall the game, but the uninstall freezes at about 30%. CPU resources are consumed and I'm stuck there. This is the same problem I had with this drive in the past, so I wasn't shocked.

So, uninstall refuses to work. Are there any steps I can take to uninstall manually? I'd like to reinstall the game on a good drive and play it.

In case your wondering, the last time this happened to me, I was doing a clean install of windows anyway, so I just formatted.
 
well i'm no expert but you could try deleting the files and then cleaning out your registry files. other than that i dunno.
 
99% of the game installs into the Games folder, however its the 1% thats installed elsewhere that causes problems. Only the uninstaller can remove things like DLL files in the Windows folder and Regestery keys. Alot of newer games also install parts into the My Doncuments folder. If you delete the Games primary folder you will get most of it, what is left behind shouldn't do any harm. you will also want to delete the Shortcuts in your start menu and on your desktop. You could also run a Registry Cleaner to help clean out the Reg files.

He could maybe Ghost the drive to another drive that actually worked, then uninstall it.

That's what I did! Stupid C&C generals wouldn't uninstall when I tried doing it the normal way.
 
The most complete (though it takes a bit longer) way to accomplish what you want to do is to remove the easily accessible pieces (game dir), then reinstall the game to a good location, and run the uninstaller after that. This may seem a bit repetative and unnecessarily complicated, but the game data that is not in the game directory, is almost always stored in the same place regardless of the "install location" and thus will get picked up with the proper uninstall.

 
There are third party programs you can use that analyzes the software and uninstalls it for you, including the registry entries. Not guaranteed to get everything but it's better than nothing :)

Haven't used one since Win98 tho, so i dunno if they're still available for XP.
 
there's a thing called "regcleaner" that'll help.

it'll clean out the reg entries for programs.

lmk if you can't find it and i'll up it somewhere.
