I uninstalled my x-fi sound card recently and now every time i load vista I get a windows error:

"SPI (creative X-Fi Module) has stopped working... A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available"

I have uninstalled using the creative uninstaller and the driver cleaner pro program as well as deleting any references to creative in the registry. I also have checked the creative forums with no luck...

Any suggestions on this? Thanks

Check your start up items and services in msconfig.
Also, did you change your default audio in your BIOS?

i have checked the startup and nothing from creative is showing, i also went in the bios and enabled onboard sound.

Try this:

Open up an elevated (admin) command prompt:

At the prompt that opens up, type:

Set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices

Press enter; then type:

devmgmt.msc

This will open up Device Manager. Up at the top, under View, click 'Show Hidden devices.'

Now look for any Creative entry (they will most likely be under either Game and Sound Devices, Non-PNP Devices, or maybe even under System entries; look for greyed out (and non-greyed out) entries labeled Creative or starting with CT - especially in the Non-PNP Devices section.)

Any entries you find -> right click, uninstall, check the box that says 'delete driver software', click OK. Some entries may not have the 'delete driver' option.

this should completely remove any existing drivers off your system.

Besides running a third party driver cleaner, I'm not sure what else to recommend, short of an OS reinstall, which I personally try to avoid at all costs.

thanks for the suggestion, i'm not sure how i go about "Open up an elevated (admin) command prompt: " could you let me know how? i do know how to open a regular command prompt :)

I think hes saying Start Run then type cmd

Depending on your operating system...

If you are on XP, just use an admin account and do start->run

Type cmd, press enter

And you should be good.

On vista:

Start-> Type cmd -> right click the cmd.exe link that pops up -> run as administrator

I tried all this and its still there, this is very frustrating, you would think the uninstaller would get rid of everything especially something that pops up on every restart...

Well other than a 3rd party driver cleaner, I can't help you any further, short of an OS re-install. Sorry. Maybe someone else has an idea.

Well, I've been fighting this issue as well. In my case I was successful with my workaround:

1. Browse to C:\Windows\SysWOW64\
2. Add a new column (right click on one of the existing columns)
3. Click "More..."
4. Tick "Company" then hit OK
5. Sort by "Company" and look out for all the Creative entries (make sure you switch to Details view before)
6. Delete them
7. There may be 4 DLL files that can not be deleted just by deleting them, so try the freeware "UnDLL" (you may experience problems after killing DLLs, so you might want to skip this step)
8. Use the freeware EasyCleaner (made in Finland, yeah!) to clean traces and remove the start ups from creative
9. Feel the relief :)

I just registered to tell you this.

Note: This workaround might work on other Windows OS such as XP or Vista x86. Look out for a file called CTXFISPI.EXE. Once you found the folder where this file is located, browse to that folder and follow the steps starting with 2.
