Uninstall files in Windows XP directory

In Windows XP C:\WINDOWS I have a lot of hidden folders called something like $NtUninstallKB923561$, the number is different for each folder. There are about 200 of these folders. What are these and can I safely delete these??
 
IIRC those are knowledge base updates, you can delete them however say you installed a KB update and then deleted the nt uninstaller folder only to find out that, that particular update is causing an issue, since you deleted the folder you wouldnt be able to uninstall it.

Yes, they are safe to delete, assuming none of them have caused any grief.
I personally tend to prefer using CCleaner, as it will remove those. Then I also use CCleaner to remove the registry entries that put them in Add/Remove Programs
