So what really can happen when pulling cards from the motherboard or plugging the atx 24pin plug in with the psu switch on and plugged in by mistake?

All these years I've had this happen now and then (need to learn patience) and never had hardware failure. Is hardware more durable than people give credit, or am I just lucky?

I think you are just lucky. I suppose it has something to do with static electricity or something.

Just lucky. If your hardware zap electricty from a pci card you are pulling out, it could ruin the mobo.

A bit of both. Some manufacturers put protections in place.

Lastnight I plugged in the 24pin atx plug into the motherboard and the standbylight on the board came on an a tiny little noisless spark from one of the pins and I died a little inside.

Nothing is wrong though, everything seems 100% fine.

Do you mean with the PSU switched on or the computer switched on? If it's just the PSU, I've also been doing it for ages and nothing's died on me because of it. YMMV.

(on a side note, did the thread title remind anyone else of Half-Life?)

With the whole system on, you'll most likely fry something.

If the system is off, but the PSU's rear switch is on, then it should be safe.
