Unexplained, sudden slowdowns/cutting out from 3600HGV

Around 9:30PM tonight my internet started to act up. First it seemed like the DSL coming into the house was having trouble, but now I am having trouble even running video over my LAN (from my desktop to my phone). My ping on places like speedtest.net is usually 30-50, and my download speed is in the 12MBPS range. Right now I'm getting 150+ ping and about 1.5mbps down on my laptop, desktop (that is hardwired to the modem), and my phone. Rebooted the 3600HGV U-Verse modem, checked every cable's connection to it, but I am still having these issues. I am stumped. I can't think of anything that would be giving me intermittent, slow service not just for the internet but even for my LAN. Thoughts? The only thing that has changed is that today the cord got knocked out of the socket for a few seconds, turning the modem off, but this was mid-day and everything was fine until the late evening, so I suspect that isn't the issue.

download and run:

cant really help without more info. you could try factory resetting it. How long have you had that 3600? might be time to upgrade to the newer 5031 gateway they have now.

Well after one more reset around 1:30AM things seemed to have sorted themselves out. I'm not looking to pinpoint the specific issue so much as understand what sort of issue could cause a slowdown in both internet and LAN connections. 3600HGV is probably two years old.

As if by magic, the problems returned again tonight around midnight. Currently fluctuating between 0.5mbps and 5mpbs. I cannot fathom what the cause could be. Unfortunately the problem is going in and out so unpredictably that I can't get a useful readout on that realtime tool. Perhaps most curiously, my wired LAN computer is now running at 10mpbs while my phone is only getting 0.5mpbs at best.

turn off everything that is connected with wifi and unplug everything but the main pc, run a speed test.

unplug that main pc, reconnect the phone via wifi and run another speed test.

Post the results.

Modem shows no signs of error. Ethernet/Wireless connections are blinking at what seems an unusually fast rate, but no red lights have shown up. However, I just tried to connect my Apple laptop to the network after being in standby mode overnight and got a "Could not connect" "A connection timeout occurred" error, which I have never had before.

Since last night the main PC is pulling at least 10mpbs, while the remote devices including my Apple laptop and iPhone are getting 0.5mpbs. Very odd indeed.

I am in the middle of a big project on my main PC right now, but I will try to reboot everything later today and see if that fixes it. Does anyone have any guesses as to what could cause this sort of issue?

I think that's likely as well. What makes one go bad though? I figured if it was going to break it would either work fully or be broken fully, not slowly crap out.

I have a spare gateway you could use to test, pm me if you want to try and see if that resolves it.

Replaced the router/modem with a new 5031NV model and the issue is now resolved. Didn't get a clear answer on why the old gateway was broken, but it clearly was.

Thank you so much for your offer crusty. That's incredibly generous of you. The sort of offer I would expect from a friend, not a stranger on the internet. I knew there was a reason I liked this forum so much.

Edit: second question. This new router does 802.11N. I have only one access point. Should I use 20mhz or 40mhz given that I am limited to the 2.4ghz spectrum?
