I have been running my machine for about one month now at ~ 3.5ghz (160x22)...stable based on prime 95. Running my memory at stock 1600 (160x10). This is all on air with no increase in default voltages. Rock solid stable.

But....I was finding it annoying to wait for the boot (seemed to take a long time), and it 'felt' like applications took a long time to respond to mouse input.

On a whim, I reset my bios to "optimized default", which ran the processor in turbo mode, ran the bclk at 133mhz, and set the multimplier at anywhere between 9 at idle and 26 at peak. It underclocked my memory at 1333mhz. Result: lightning fast boots, and nearly instantaneous response of applications to mouse click.


Hmmm....does this make sense? Bottlenecks somewhere?

While I did lose frames/second in certain applications, the pleasure of responsiveness is attractive. I'd like to have the power of both the responsivness and the frames from the overclock.

I had the same problem...had a E5200 overclocked from 2.5ghz to 3ghz and while gaming was faster in general, Windows itself (menus,etc) and starting programs took forever...never knew what caused it.

Can't be power, my PSU is a BFG EX-1000 1000 watt...definitely not it.

I don't know, maybe timings on RAM were real high? Slow hard drives? But that doesn't answer anything...
 
could just be a setting in the bios that is being enabled when you run it in optimized mode.. ive had this happen with a couple of my systems.. id just leave it in optimized mode then set the overclock you want and see what happens.. if it starts lagging again then it could be a voltage issue and its leaving the cpu downlocked because its unstable..
 
Each day I learn more. Last night I discovered a bios update for my board. Flashed it, and returned to the oc....the performance of os responsiveness seem to be improved. Of course, this is a subjective test, so results are less than conclusive.
 
Interesting... im running into a problem like this at the moment but I need to reload the OS after the MOBO swap from P45 to P55 to be sure its not that.
