Got a desktop with vista home premium. There was a system restore done in safe mode and when trying to undo it, it says there was no restore done...it went back to the factory settings when bought during the restore done in safe mode although. I used ( recover my files) recovery software but i get a buch of nonsense n a few pics.. I need to know how to undo this, i lost all docs, music,pics... There is a partition with a backup but i think it's the factory one...err please help me ...

If you restored a past System Restore point, that would have altered the data on the system partition enough to where the data you apparently lost truly is lost, and more than likely overwritten at this point. Continuing to use that machine is just making things worse, so turn that box off quick or all possible hope for any data recovery is lost. That's Rule #1 of data recovery: stop using the box where the data that needs to be recovered is located.

As for recovering the data, my recommendation would be giving TestDisk a try. It's open source, free, and very good at what it does, sometimes rivaling commercial data recovery software in certain situations.

With respect to undoing a System Restore point, that's simply not something you're going to have any luck with at all. Restore points are stored for later restoration, obviously, but once that restore point has been restored you're out of luck for whatever was there just prior to that restoration - unless of course you made a brand new restore point before doing the restoration of some previous one.

Yes, that's a bit convoluted to read but I assure you it's accurate. :)

Good luck, regardless...
