Underscan 1:1 problem with Panasonic TX-P42V20

When I use my TX-p42v20 in TV mode everything is fine, it uses every pixel available all the way up to the bezel. But when I switch it to AV mode (HDMI1) where a PC is connected I get a type of underscan problem. I get a black border all around the Windows desktop image which is slightly thicker on the left and right sides compared to the top and bottom. So the desktop image is smaller than the physical screen size, it does not use all of the pixels when displaying the HMDI source image. And around the desktop image there is a thick black border of sorts.

In the TVs menu Setup -.> Other Settings there is a option called "16:9 Overscan". If I switch this to "On" the image grows a bit, but still refuses to use all of the screen size, it simply won't use all of the pixels. So even with the Overscan turned on the Windows desktop image is smaller than the physical screen size. The black border around the image persists.

I know that other TVs have settings to simply *read* incoming sources från HDMI ports without doing anything with the incoming image. Only reading it as it is. These settings are sometimes called "Just read" on LGs televisions or "1:1" or "1,1" or something similar. I know Sony used a setting called "show all pixels" on some of their sets. But I can not figure out how to accomplish this on my TV when I use HDMI as source. In normal TV mode *all* of the pixels are used, so I know that the TV *can* use them. I simply have to tell it to do this also when displaying HDMI signals.

The PC which is connected via the HDMI cable is running Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit and uses an ATI Radeon HD 5750 (Sapphire Vapor-x) and the latest drivers from ATI.

Is there perhaps some genious out there who can figure out how to make my TV use all its pixels?

Under Desktops & Displays in CCC right click your tv under where it says "Please select a display" at the bottom and hit configure. Should give you the option to change overscan/underscan.

Aha, so there are controls for this in Catalyst Control Centre? That sounds great!
Only problem is that since CCC is so poorly programmed it does not install correctly on my computer. I get the error "Application Install: install package failure" that a lot of people are suffering from. This means that the ATI display driver installs correctly but that the CCC does not. There are many forum threads on the internet about this problem. I have tried several of these "solutions" to no avail.

I would rather not have to purchase an nVidia graphics card to solve this problem with the TV. I really wish I could get CCC to install properly. :(

I had the same thing happen a few times, took some creative google searches but i found out how to fix it.

A few methods are posted in this 2 page thread: http://forums.amd.com/game/messageview.cfm?catid=279&threadid=109142

Thank you for your replies, I solved my problem the easy but expensive way. I removed my Ati 5770 and bought an nVidia 460 card. Upon installing the nVidia drivers my TV resynced and set the screen resolution to the TV's native res @ 1920 x 1080 and *without* an automatic preset underscan. As opposed to ATi's Catalyst Control Center which by default sets and underscan.

After days and days of trying to get CCC to install properly, I simply had to get rid of the ATi software, and in the process, my recently purchased Radeon 5770.

Did it suck?
Oh, yes, it sucked monkey ballz to go and buy a new gfx card.

But now my TV works perfectly and my windows desktop is super sharp! :) :)
