hello, im thinking of trying a video card that recommends a min of 350 watts in a comp with 300 watt. if a card is underpowered will it harm it or destroy it? or just make it perform poorly? thanks, tom.
 
If the powersupply is a name brand one, it should work fine. If it is generic, it probably won't work period.

Or it could just run unstable. Underpowered systems will often boot up, but lock up, randomly reboot, or give odd errors.
You're not likely to damage anything though...
 
If you have cheapo power supply and components draw more power than whatever power supply handles. I think it would take out some of the components. Just make sure you got a good name brand power supply. If power supply doesn't draw enough power. You get crashes once you load games because thats when it draws a lot of power from psu.
 
the 300 watt power supply is the one that comes in the antec aria. i dont know if thats considered a quality power supply or not. the card i want to try to run is the nvidia quadro 500 and they recommend a minimum 350 watts .i want to be sure i dont risk frying anything if i try it. thanks, tom.
 
Antec is a good name in power supplies. I have an Antec True Blue 350w supply powering a X800XT PE, 2 harddrives, 5x 80mm case fans a full boat of case lights and an XP 3200+ processor which is overclocked. Even if you don't have enough power it will probably not fry anything. The most you'll get is a series of beeping sounds to alert you of a problem.
 
Isn't it true that the real consumption power of the high end Nvidia is only 150W by itself?

So as long as there is some way to spec. how much power you need for the rest of your equipments: MB, hard drives, CD-ROM etc., then it should be okay.

But having said that, say I have a high end Nvidia in conjunction w/ 3 hard drives, how do you calculate how much power you really need?
