how do i keep my Sapphire Radeon HD 3850 from underclocking. i just want it to play at optimal settings all the time. im not worried about power consumption.

::edit:: more specifically..... it clocks down for 2d applications down to 297 core when im playing WoW... a 3d program. how can i get it to just go to the default core of 668 all of the time?

any other input? my graphics card wont clock up back to 3d speeds. it only stays at 2d speeds and it lags out my performance REALLY bad. suggestions?

ati overdrive doesnt work cuz i turned the core and memory all the way up just to test and when i play WoW it still stays clocked down to 300 mhz as shown on my Rivatuner Hardware Monitor. ill try the furry cube but wont that just put more strain on my card making it kind of cancel out the underclocking?

ok just tried the furry cube. it works and it clocks my card up to 3d speeds but when i tab over to WoW it just clocks right back down. this is really iritating and making me want to buy nvidia. could it be the slot my graphics card is in? it wouldnt seem like this would batter but you never know.

have you tried RivaTuner? it should allow you to set to whatever clock you want to use on the card, regardless of 2D/3D modes.

yeah. when i try to set a clock. (720mhz) i push apply. then it comes up with an error that says "Your hardware settings cannot be applied until you have tested them". i push the test button it does a loading bar (as if it is testing it). when i push apply again after testing, it moves the slider back down to 297 mhz.

btw, i think the reason for the clock not being raised is that WoW is not stressing the card enough. I've seen this behavior when I was messing around with the powerplay configuration on my 4850's bios. I am making a wild suggestion here --> disable A.I. in ccc and see what happens.

RivaTuner does not ask for "Clock Test", or does it? I thought only Catalyst does the "Clock Test" before you can apply the OC'ed clock.

oh great master ok CCC knowledge. lol. it worked. i disabled the A.I. in the CCC advanced and my card now clocks up when detecting a load. i still cant control the clock in Rivatuner but this has solved my horrible FPS in WoW.... which should never happen with a 3850. although with the crappy fan control that is atributed to ATI drivers... i have to turn up my fan which i can control. and yes my Rivatuner is making me test. ill post some pics in a bit.

glad it worked, lol, I wasn't expecting it to be THE solution, as I told you I was only making a wild suggestion. I am still happy to see that you've solved ur problem.

here are the pictures as promised. (not sure how big they are cuz photobucket wont let me see their true size.
this one is when i pushed Apply. it came up with that error bar saying i have to test my settings. test button circled.

here is the picture where it is "testing" my settings. only thing is that it turns my clock back to its idle setting. my CCC A.I. is off two.

Get the new version of Rivatuner. The older version has the overclocking issue with the newer drivers.

Wow majority of people overclock. Never heard of underclocking :).

it auto underclocks itself for power saving i guess kinda like an AMD cpu with Cool&Quiet or an Intel with Speedstep..... i would never purposly slow my card down when playing games ^^

Don't run in Windowed mode.

Yeah I've heard about issues with that, but never actually seen it happen.
I could try loading up my WoW in windowed right now and check my clocks.

I play WoW in 1680x1050 Windowed 24/7 and I've never had fps issues, but I also never checked my 2D/3D clocks.

edit;
My 4870 is running 750/900 while playing WoW in a window.
As opposed to the 500/900 it runs in 2D.
