Underclocking Ram

I just started overclocking for the first time this weekend playing with a D805 and Gigabyte DS-3. I have some DDR2 400 ram in it until I get some DDR2 800 and I have been trying different settings. Whenever I overclock the ram under 450 I can boot windows and do a 32M super pi but the comp will randomly restart anything over 400. This leaves me pretty limited with my divider since right now the highest I can get is 160 fsb. When I underclock the ram to like 350 or 360 in an effort to run 166-180fsb windows will freeze at the login screen. Is this typical? Just curious if there is anything else I could try.

1. are u using a software oc tool or doing this in BIOS?
2. do you have a devider to run 1:1 or 2:1 or what ever that you can drop the ram and keep the FSB up on the cpu?

run memtest86, it could be that your RAM is bad...cuz if its underclocked unless there is an unknown voltage issue going on there, there should be no problem with that setup using DDR2.

U said U have DDR2-400 clocked to 450......If you do that, you may have to run slightly fatter timings (3-3-3-8 versus 2.5-2-2-7) That way its stable. I had issues as well. Mine is underclocked for stability. When I crank it up, I get random reboots, so I just leave it. Its still very fast

and DDR2 is just not full on there yet as DDR is. Give it a year or so and it will catch up I think.
