My WHS is running a p4 2.8 with 3 hard drives and 1GB of memory.

The case is hot. I touch the outside of the case and it's warm, I can't imagine what the inside is like. The case has some passive cooling vents, but it occurs to me that I could underclock that cpu to cool it off.

Since it's just a server it does'nt need much cpu power. But this is a free way to cool it off, no?

I've never done any over or underclocking, so I have no idea what kind of temp decrease I can expect. Is it worth it?
 
Only you know that at this point:)

If CPU utilization doesn't get very high, it's probably worth it to extend the longevity of your parts.
 
no harm underclocking to say 2.2.
but i'd put maybe a pci-slot fan in if you have a slot free. Solved
p4 crashes here back when I was using windows 98 AFAIK.
I underclock a 2.4 to 1.8 when it is under heavy load compiling stuff
that fails otherwise
