Hi guys,

I'm thinking of grabbing a c2d for my asterisk box. This box is very idle right now even with pentiumd-805, but I was thinking I might be able to reduce power usage signifcantly by dropping in a c2d and underclocking/undervolting it.

Anyone tried this?
 
I can run my E6400 reliably as low as 200 x 6 ~ 1200 MHz at 1.1 volts on a P5B Deluxe but you only save about 25 watts at idle compared to when I run it at 3400 MHz.

If you want a low power system then go for a single core AMD chip if you can find one and combine it with a board that has integrated nVidia graphics.

What is total system consumption? Idle my system consumption is about 250W measured at the wall with a 2 * 160G sata in raid1, pentd-805, 2G ddr2
 
Holy crap that's a lot of idle consumption. An E6700 with 8800GTS and two raptors...all at full load are at ~250w. Idle is ~160w. If you've got a 7000 series NVIDIA or X1000 series ATI you'd see less than 150w idle, and an 8600 GT would put it 120-130w.

edit: The quad core system below draws 260w idle...420w load at 3.6GHz!

Perhaps I swapped a 1 for 2 by memory :) I will test tonight & repost.
 
Get one of the newer SL9TA E6300s (Allendale Core).

They are only supposed to consume 12W while idle.
 
What are you guys using to measure the power consumption (watts) your systems are using?
 
Enable EIST in the BIOS (should be default) and when idle, the system will throttle the cpu multiplier to 6x. When using cpu power, then it will jump back up to 9x.
