which will get me the most "bang for the buck"?

i dont have a desire to do extreme overclocking.. just something very stable that i dont have to constantly check for stability.

and all of them seem to be 333FSB.. would i actually benefit from bringing the fsb to 400 and bringing the multiplier down?

reason i ask is cause i have an 8k3a (kt333) and i am debating getting a DFI Ultra Infinity if it is worth it.


also.. not sure if it matters, but ill be dropping a 9800pro in this setup
 
The Mobile Bartons only have a 266 Mhz FSB. If you're not going to overclock, get a regular Barton.

If you do OC, higher FSBs benefits the performance (increased mem performance and the like).
 
hrm.. so would a dfi ultra infinity with a 2500 barton and 512-1024 of pc3200 sound right? or would you recommend something else?
 
Mobile 2500+ has similar performance with much lower heat production. One big reason they overclock so well on air cooling.

those 2 factors might be worth the slight increase in cost.

fyi.. this will be a watercooled setup, but geared toward sound reduction.
 
At stock, the Mobile Barton compared to the regular Barton will probably have slightly lower performance in comparison because the mobile Bartons have 266 Mhz FSBs whereas the regular Bartons have 333 Mhz FSBs.

It's absolutely identical if you change the multiplier and FSB to the same as the standard Barton core.
Not only that, but the mobiles are binned processors that run at lower voltages at the same core frequency as non-mobiles and so produce less heat at stock settings. They are also rated to higher core temperatures than their desktop counterparts.

There is no reason to buy a standard Barton unless you can't stand to see your BIOS booting up with an "unknown CPU type".

Get the mobile, no question about it. Unless your board doesn't support multiplier/FSB changes in which case you should buy one that does :D

AFAIK, all Mobile Bartons are unlocked. They have to be for power management.

It is on par with a non-mobile 2500+. AMD's performance rating takes into account CPU speed, cache size and FSB to give a performance factor (supposedly what an original AMD T'Bird would have to clock for the same effective speed). The non-mobile clocks slower on a faster FSB.

after reading the responses in this thread i couldnt agree more. hell if i cant get it to OC much then ill atleast have less heat do deal with which means a quieter system.

I will probably just see which mobile barton fits my price budget.. unless there is one type that is famous for being an overclocker now.

2500+ @ $93
2600+ @$101

I'm told the 2500+ is the price/performance sweet spot and the better OCer. Of course, as with all circuits, YMMV.
 
I would get the mobile Barton, runs cooler and oc's well.
 
Mobile 2400+ would be my pick. It overclocks to the same point as a 2500+/2600+, no reason to spend too much on it.
 
i bet that the main mobo manufacturers will make a bios update soon that will identify the mobile procs.
