Right now running:

E6600 @ 3.4ghz
EVGA 122-CK-NF 690i Chipset
CORSAIR XMS2 2GB (2 x 1GB) DDR2 800 (PC2 6400)
XFX 8800 GTX 768

Basically my computing needs have changed a bit, instead of just gaming, I do some video editing (for family stuff), music, movies, and still game some. I am looking at the following upgrades, for a little more power. Let me know your thoughts.

Q6600 (I plan to OC as much as I can)
Abit IX38 Quad GT or Asus Maximus Formula
CORSAIR DOMINATOR 4GB(2 x 2GB) DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) Dual Channel
XFX 8800GTX 768 (same video)

I want to OC, but I keep going between the E8400 and the Q6600. Do you think I will see a significant boost in performance gaming, and otherwise with the Q6600?

Given these specifics, what do you experts think? I don't want to throw away money if it's not going to net me results. What do you think of the first build, or would you go with the E8400?

Also, what board would you guys go with? Asus Maximus Formula or the Abit IX38?

Seems to me like youre pretty much fine as you are. I dont think youll see a big enough boost to justify a new CPU/mobo/RAM. Just adding some RAM would be the smart/cheap thing to do.

If youre set on new stuff though I would get the E8400, a P35 board, and 4GB.
 
Assuming you are using vista x64 I would get 2 more gigs of ram. But other than that I doubt you will see a huge difference. I would wait to see how the 9800gtx and gx2 pan out and maybe purchase one of those. If you are a huge multitasker/folder/or transcode alot of video then the q6600 is worth it, but not otherwise.
 
If you use your computer for more than 3 hours a day at home, then I recommend upping to the Quad core. If you only use it for less than 3 hours a day, stay with the same. Maybe you might need a faster / bigger harddrive?
 
With the added multitasking and video editing I think you are definitely better off with the quad core set up. Should be good to go. Maybe more RAM but see how the 4GB runs ya first.
 
There's not much point in worrying about 1066MHz RAM for a Q6600, unless you expect to get over a 3.6GHz overclock, which is pretty rare. 2GB more of DDR2-800 RAM might be a cheaper option (giving 4x1GB).
 
If you want the most performance for the $, get 2 more 1G sticks of RAM, since that can be found for around $20-$30.

What I would do is try to get a 2x2GB set for <$70, so you'd have 6G total.

If you're going Vista 64, 4G isn't TOO great because a lot of it gets consumed, so you'll end up with about 3G usable anyway. Unless I'm wrong, it's not problematic or disadvantageous to run 2x2 and 2x1 together, right?

And yea, you don't need 1066 RAM. Just get DDR2 800. So, either Mithent's option or my option works, depending on how much you want to spend.
