Unbelievable RAID failure coincidence - help!

(posting this in general hardware because I'd like an answer very, very quickly)

I've been using my MB's onboard serial raid controller in raid 1 for several months - before that a parallel controller card for 2 years. I recently decided to disable it, to get full capacity from my disks, and to use an external drive to automatically back up. **I am not making this next part up**

Today, I turn on my pc with the intention of disabling raid. The raid bios pops up and says the array has failed :eek: :eek: FIRST TIME EVER!

It's worse than that though, because the damn thing is so badly translated I don't know what it's telling me. It says "fault HDD found: device 0 fault" and that the array needs to be duplicated to ensure data consistancy. The options are 1. Duplicate now, and 2. Continue to boot. What will happen if I choose duplicate? The manual has no info on this, and the abit site is abysmal. Would I be better off disconnecting one drive?

It's saying that your primary hard drive is dead and it needs to rebuild the RAID for reliability.
"Continue to boot" means disregard the error and run off a single disk. It would behave exactly the same as if you unplugged the dead drive completely, but it saves you the trouble of opening your case now.
"Duplicate now" means you've plugged in a working drive and want to restore the redundancy. It will take some time (maybe a few hours)m during which time you can't use your PC, and you need to get a new hard drive before you do this.

You can keep using your computer in the meantime with the single disk, but be warned that if anything happens to the remaining disk now you're screwed.

Your RAID BIOS would have given you the exact same thing had you disconnected the drive. There may be an option in your mobo's BIOS setup to disable RAID support on your SATA and make it merely a sinlge drive adapter. If that option is available, you should use it, as not running the RAID BIOS should improve your boot time and reduce driver complexity once in Windows.

Really, it's not a big deal. Just do not allow the RAID BIOS to wipe the drive, and either of your drives will remain bootable. Simply disabling the RAID BIOS in your Mobo's BIOS setup should allow you to boot either drive normally, assuming that Windows has a mass storage driver for it, or can simply use the ATA driver.

Once you verify that a single drive is bootable, proceed to wipe the other drive and partition/format as desired.
