Unable to install 9800 Pro...

 I don't understand what is going on here. I bought a 9800 Pro today to replace my aging 8500 LE. I followed the steps to uninstalling my current video card as I always did, in fact I did more than usual and followed the FAQ thread. Once I got my 9800 in without a problem, I turned on the computer, everything is fine. When it gets to Windows I am thinking "this is going to be great!". Then as it hits the Add Hardware Wizard it stops cold telling me that the files cannot be found and cannot install. Okay, I thought, so I decided to try to install the latest drivers and it tells me that a standard vga driver is not installed and the installation will not continue. So I attempt to reboot and do all kinds of wacky things just to try to even get a bloody standard driver installed, and nothing, it keeps disabling the card and telling me there is problems installing drivers! This sucks, I have never had this kind of trouble installing a video card. It is stupid! Any suggestions would be awesome, guys. This is really making me upset because I just spent a bunch of money for one of these things...Anyway...feedback please!

Thanks in advance

Yes, they are uninstalled as I stated in my previous post. What needs to be changed in the BIOS, I screwed around in that for a while.

BTW my hardware specs:

Barton 2800+
Asus E-Deluxe Mobo
1 GB PC3200 running in Dual Channel @ 200mhz
Not working 128 Mb ATI 9800 Pro at the moment
45GB WD HD
52x32x52 LG Re-writable
16x Pioneer DVD-ROM

Ummmm, you NEVER install ATI cards using the windows built in driver install. EVER. Run the newest executable 4.6 Cats from Ati.com and you should be fine.

If nothing else, format C: will solve all your worries :D

Haha, yeah...the format might be an option by the end of this :p I can't even install the new drivers because it says a standard vga is not installed...or something to that degree. It is funny because I have a trick to make it work. First you install some of the Cats, restart, Windows recognizes the 9800, doesnt install anything because files cant be found, run quake 3 for 5 seconds, and for some reason I can play anything until I restart the computer...then repeat, lol.

Yeah...Windows doesn't seem to detect it properly when it boots up then disables the card. Once I enable it goes through the detection process again and run a game and it works. No drivers actually fully install. Should this be a sign to reformat?

actually, to me it sounds like an issue of conflicting IRQs

it could also be a setting in your BIOS 'init PCI adapter then AGP'

...and some systems have 'AGP aperture size' this should be set to the same amount of ram your vidcard has, though there ARE some other schools of thought on it.

Hmm...in the BIOS it is pointing to AGP rather than PCI, aperture is 128, and when it finally does detect it for the moments the computer is on, it says no conflicts...dunno

some of the old mobos just CANT give enough voltage to newer AGP cards...

that would explain quirks.

also try making it init PCI first stead of AGP, it might do the trick. i remember back in the day some mobos were so squirrely thaty ou had to do that to get em to work right

My motherboard is not old at all, so that shouldn't be the problem. I will try that PCI trick for the heck of it.
