Unable to expand array with certain hard drives

Hello all,

I bought 6 WD Reds and I have been stress testing the drives. None had any issues with bad blocks but upon further messing around when I attempt to expand with 3 of the drives I get a message:
Code:
No Disks With Enough Capacity Available For Raid Expansion

Now if I take the 3 "bad" drives, create an array, I'm able to expand the array with the 3 "good" drives.

Coincidentally, I had a drive fail in another array and I tried to use one of the "bad" drives as a spare to rebuild it but it didn't do anything. It started rebuilding after I added a "good" drive as a hot spare.

Screenshots from RAID. The first 3 are the "bad" ones and the last 3 are the "good" ones.

The RAID controller is an Areca 1680 and I'm trying to create/expand a RAID6.

I would post any relevant event information but in my groggy state of attempting to mute the beeper this morning, I hit the clear event buffer instead of mute.
